Posted: 14:45 - 11 Dec 2008 Post subject: Adjusting the front damping.. |
 |
|
My bike has adjuster knobs marked 1234 to adjust the front damping.
Now usually,to make sure there both set the same i would completely unscrew the adjusters, then re-tighten together so i know there both the same.
Well mine dont unscrew to a stop, they just keep turning,so i'm assuming they work the same as a brake/clutch adjuster where they only have 4 settings regardless.(they turn with a clicking sound, but with very little resistance.I would expect a little effort needed to turn them if they only have 4 settings?)
Could someone please confirm this for me please...
It's a 91 gsx750f.
Cheers

Got any pictures of the adjusters? If they don't actually screw in / out, and they only rotate, then i'd imagine that they do only have 4 possible settings, regardless, as you said.
Can't find anything about suspension adjustment for your bike on google etc, so i can't be totally sure. Just trying to work it out logically. ____________________

I'm assuming they look like this:
https://www.hillsmotorparts.co.uk/ebay_bike_images/large/5082.jpg
But mine have black caps on the top that you turn by hand.(will get a pic tomorrow)
It would be easy to figure it out if i took the tops off,but since my garage got broke into,i'm keeping the bike in the garden so have no tools
I'm hoping this will explain the steering wobble when i let go of the bars at speed. ____________________ DRZ-400sm |

I cant physically see anything screwing in or out while turning the nobs, and i would expect them to be a bit harder to turn considering there putting pressure straight on the springs. ____________________ DRZ-400sm |

Its the bigger part of those that you turn to adjust preload, that puts pressure on the springs.
The tiny little adjusters in the middle to adjust the damping do some sort of magic regarding valves inside he forks that change resistance.
They look just like the ones on my bike, but they don't twiddle all th way around

Obviously my bike will likely be different to yours, but forks are forks are forks, so they shouldn't be hugely different. basically what i can gather from my Haynes is;
The big adjuster at the top is preload. The little adjuster in the middle of that, is for rebound damping. There should be another little adjuster widget at the bottom of the fork leg, that adjusts compression damping.
To get the standard settings for my bike, i have to turn them fully clockwise, until they can go no further, and then turn them back out a certain amount of turns. They also have a dot punched into the adjuster, which lines up with a marking on the top of the forks.
When you turn the little damping adjuster, which way are you turning it, and is the preload adjuster turning with it?
In theory, the setting for the preload adjuster depends on its position relevant to the top of the fork. Whereas the damping adjuster has its position set relevant to the preload adjuster.
I'm gonna guess that i've made it sound totally over complicated, put i'll try and draw up a picture to expalin what i mean....
Hope that's of some use to you!
EDIT: Also, i've got some sttings for my bike that i got from this thread. maybe there will be some sttings for your bike in there too? I've not yet had a look, will do in a bit though.

Disregard that, i suck cocks.

That there says that your front forks have only adjustment for rebound damping, so that must be what the black adjusters are. I find it odd that they have no preload adjustment, as alot of these bikes seem to have no adjustment, preload only, or preload *and* damping. Not *only* damping on it's own. Meh, learn something new everyday. Will try and see if i can find the standard settings...
*To Google!*
EDIT: Aha!
| Quote: | There's a bit of adjustment to play with in the suspension. The forks offer three rebound damping settings while at the back you get a choice of seven different spring preloads and, again, three rebound options.
I rarely fiddle with the suspension on test bikes. They usually arrive with everything set somewhere in the middle of the possible range of adjustment and they usually work damn well. Such was not the case with this Suzook, however. It jittered at the front and while it was not in any sense alarming, the back end felt vague and floppy both flat out in straight lines and laid over in gentle but fast curves.
The forks were easy to adjust with small knobs at the top of each leg and clearly marked datum points. The bike arrived set on "1".
I tried "3" and finally settled for "2" after I'd finished playing around with the rear end.
It's not so easy at the rear end. The rebound is controlled by a sliding knob under the seat which is simple enough to get at. Adjusting the stepped preload collar on the Full Floater suspension unit isn't so great. You can get at it from the lefthand side when the bike is on its centrestand (yes, it's actually got one) if you lie down to the job. The "C" spanner supplied in the toolkit is not that great however and you need to exert a lot of pressure in a restricted space to shift the collar. If the bike were mine I'd get a better tool and I'd also use Copaslip or similar on the collar as its position makes it a prime candidate for rust and seizure. |

From what i could find, his bike only has rebound damping adjustment on the forks, so they should both be set the same.

Cheers for all the info there Noxious i owe you one (but no can do on the man love thing )
I tryed turning the adjusters while i was out on a ride today, and to me made no difference at all,but then i'm not really used to these kind of bikes.Maybe i just didn't notice the change.
NiteMare:
I never considered it could be the rear end causing the wobble.
No top-box or anything, but my rear tyre is squared off a bit.Not sure if that could cause it?
Cheers for the reply's ____________________ DRZ-400sm |
