i have my test on monday the 15th, with a full days training on friday 12th, and im already bricking it lol.

any1 have any advice for keeping relaxed and steady?

any help would be great, cheers!

Go and do lots of practise!

Make sure the person taking you for training knows your weak points before you start, so you can get more confident.
Other than that, not much you can do! Don't worry too much about it, get a good nights sleep the night before, maybe take some rescue remedy, useful stuff!

How long have you had your new bike? What did you have before?

oh lol! where this is where this story gets confusing lol...

well i got my new suzuki dr125sm bout 2months ago, and was fine on it, it had a great riding position which helped a lot with everything really.
but last week i was leaving work and was knocked off, i am now using a courtesy bike...a yamaha ybr 125... and im struggling on it, i am practising as much as i can, but work all day, and by the time i get home its dark and the roads are icing over! which makes it hard 2 get any practice in.

my main problems would be the going steady in a slow paced straight line, and ... speed limits! they really confuse me lol... god knows what ill be like when i have an instructor up my backside Sad lol

thanks alot 4 the advice btw!

How can you get confused with speed limits.... big numbers telling you how fast  or slow! They should take you round the test route, so just get to know the different speed limits on the route, and go and practise it at the weekend too.
As for the different bike, don't get on it and think 'oh I can't ride it slow etc etc' just relax, practise your slow control but don't tense up, it really won't help!

when it comes to test day, get to the test centre about an hour early. in that hour ride around on the bike non-stop.

sounds a bit enduring but in that time you'll become extremely well adjusted to it to the point that you'll feel more natural on the bike than off, which will be good for the test. practice whatever you're nervous about in the hour (for me it was the u-turn, e-stops are fine as my brakes are shit so even if i slam on i come to a nice pleasant stop).

check out wisenerl's post in this thread also;

ok, lets split this down to make it easier.

To start with

The examiner will want to see

Licence - paper & Photo card or your passport if you dont have photo card licence.
CBT Certificate
Theory Pass certificate
Insurance certificate - if using your own bike

He will then kit you up with radio

Before you go out on the road

He will do the show me, tell me questions.

Makes sure you know these https://www.dsa.gov.uk/General.asp?id=211

On the Road part 1

The initial ride will be quite short, so prep yourself not to make silly mistakes as this is when your nerves at their worst. The reason it will be quite short is because they tend to do the uturn and e-stop early on.

Be aware that he may ask you more than once to stop and pull off, this is normal. Usually he will just ask you to pull up on the left at a safe point and once you have stopped he will ask you to move off. I have covered this in more detail below.

U-turn and E-stop

You will pull into a street and he will ask you to pull up on the left turn off the engine and get off the bike and he will explain what he wants you to do.

First he will ask that you wheel the bike around in a uturn and stop at the other side of the road. What he is looking for is strong observation skills, look ahead and behind before you move and as your moving across the road. Exagerate your observation, dont just make a quick look. Dont turn the ignition or lights on when walking the bike.

Once at the other side he wont prompt you, just get on the bike, start it and prepare for your uturn. Take your time.

Give yourself about 15-20 feet before starting the turn, dont try and cram it all in to a few feet. Before you move look ahead and behind, make it obvious your using your mirrors and shoulder check.

Just before you start the turn, make a very obvious right lifesaver then smoothly round. Dont take the chance of getting round on just throttle, slip the clutch, revs up and cover the back brake, you should only need to use the back brake to control the speed round, but you have the clutch and throttle to adjust the power should you need it.

Once round come to a stop and wait for more instructions. Remember its a U turn not a J turn. You should try and come to stop at about the same place you started from but on the other side obviously.

For the E-stop he will probably ask you to do a circuit around the block, he will step out and raise his hand when he wants you to stop, dont stop when he walks out.

If you go around the block use the opportunity to do a quick e-stop out of sight if you can and its safe, then go around to the street where he is.

Dont rush it, I did 20 mph, he did not state what I needed to do and it as fine, so dont hammer it up to 30mph.

As you approach and he raises his hand >

Off the throttle
Ease the front on
Apply the back but not heavily
More front until your giving it some pressure
clutch in at the very last minute to prevent locking the back wheel

As soon as you stop right and left shoulder check the paddle the bike into the side of the road and into neutral. Dont sit in the middle of the road trying to find 1st to ride over. And dont come down the gears when your doing the excercise, brakes only.

On the road part 2 & Tips

Ok after the excercises its all down to your riding.

You will go up and down many streets, junctions, bends, lights roundabouts, and maybe even onto expressways or dual carriageways.

I cant say what you will be doing exactly but its all about observing the highway code, planning ahead and doing it right.

Planning ahead is very important, always be looking ahead to see whats coming, junctions, lights, crossings and be thinking what your going to do.

When your coming up to lights and they are already at green what are you going to do? Keep going or slow down a bit. If tey change quickly to red do you have enough time to stop safely or do you risk going through a red? Thats where planning will help, always look ahead to get an idea if they just went to green or have been there a while, that will tell you what you need to do.

When he asks you to pull in on the left again plan your stop, is it safe? is there a junction on the other side, if so move forward a bit. When he asks you to pull away make clear forward and rear observations before you pull off and signal before you move.

When your asked to turn right from a major road into a minor, nice clear right lifesaver before you turn.

Always remember to switch the indicators off. If the examiner asks you to turn off your indicator the test is over.

When your moving along the road, every 5-10 seconds make it clear your checking your mirrors, both of them. Dont forget.

When coming to lights and your turning right plan carefully, especially when there is a yellow box on the road. Stay behind the white line unless your absolutely sure you can make the turn before the lights go to red, if your the only one waiting to turn your will be fine, however if your behind 3 cars you will deifantely want to wait until the next green light unless the road ahead on the other side is clear enough for you all to get through. Do not get caught on the box when the lights turn to red or its over.

Watch your road position, centre of the lane all the way, dominate your lane at all times, dont let anyone bully you or try and cut you up.

In terms of road position there is likely to be a right hand bend or similiar with parked cars on one side so the road space is limited and you wont be able to see around the bend. In this case move as far left of centre as you safely can so that you can see as far around the corner as possible.

When your on the right turn to the roundabout make sure you move to the outside lane, indicate, left lifesaver coming on, another going around to the exit, left indicator once you pass the last exit and off you go.

On the mini roundabout indicate your intention when coming up to it if required, but dont worry about indicating coming off if you cant as its accepted there is simply not enough time in most cases.

Speed. Make progress, dont break the limit, if its a 40 dont be doing 20 unless you have good reason.

Be Aware of pedestrians and other road users, a simple touch of the brake will make the examiner aware you have noted the hazard.

Keep it smooth all the way and make progress. Once the uturn and e-stop are out of the way your nerves will not be as bad.

When you get back to the test centre he will ask you a question about carrying passengers then tell you if you passed.

Hope that helps.

that should give you a good idea of what the test actually involves too. apart from that you just have to keep on riding as much as you can to get used to it.

as for staying steady, look ahead, don't look down. i always find that gripping the tank with my knees helps with balancing but everyone's different. just stay relaxed and wrap up warm also! if you're shivering like a dog taking a shit it'll affect your slow riding balance.

We all know the feelings we get pre-test, everyone saying you'll be fine...just relax...practise etc

What i can add is this...if you fail, re-book and don't beat yourself up too much. As for the slow paced weaving/wobbles, then 1st check tyre pressures, then carry on with your quiet back road practice sessions. I found a great place to do some figure 8's and U's and when moving in slow traffic try looking abit further ahead than you normally do.

you'll be fine...just relax...practise Wink

It isnt as bad as it sounds...
The examiners know you will be nervous and they tend to be good at putting you at ease and relaxing you, it is their job, they see several people in the same situation every day of their working week.

If you do mess up the U-Turn acknowledge it, and ask the examiner if you can have another go at it. Nothing to lose, if your riding is very good from then till the end of the test and the examiner got some the night before, you never know. Some people do get a second chance.

If you think you have failed, put it out of your mind, you cant change it, examiner might not have seen it, or only marked it as a minor

Before you set off as well ask them what to do if you dont hear an instruction clearly, or your radio doesnt seem to be working, they sometimes cover it during the radio test and setup, but if they dont, then ask.

Good luck with your training tomorrow, and on your test. Thumbs Up

right...well i got to the test centre about an hour early with my instructor, we got there that early because the other lad that was with us had just finished his test.

i parked up in the space allocated, and saw the other lad walking over, face like thunder! found out he failed because a car pulled out on him and came 2 an abrupt stop, the instructor said he should of carry on going as it was his right of way! but then again, like everyone says: if an examiner wants to fail you, they will, by any means. Shocked

by this point i was extremely nervous, especially when over hearing that a chap had just failed his for speeding, doing 32 in a 30mph zone. Shocked

but as i sat down in the waiting room, i heard my name been called, my heart stopped! Sick
the examiner led me aside to set me up with my earpiece and he sounded like a really nice bloke, and just told me not to be nervous and to be myslef.

we left the waiting room and walked over to the carpark, he then asked me two questions...one being: how do you no if the horn is working LOL

we then rode out of the car park, went on for about 2minutes to a side road and done my e.stop and u-turns, they both went v.well, although i no i messed up on my e.stop as i forgot 2 check my RHlifesaver. we then rode around for 30mins or so, luckily the route we chose had no speed limit changes (all 30mph zones) . so i thought id be safe and do 25mph instead Razz

we then went back to the test centre where he asked me a question about pillions. i answered with confidence...looked up and saw a grin on his face, and then he said the words...''mr thomas, im pleased to tell you... i was absolutely thrilled! jumped up and i cud have hugged him! haha. Wink Twisted Evil

i then wheelied out of the carpark and nearly fell off, and i didnt care ! Mr. Green
PASSED WITH 1 MINOR!

if anyone is reading this who has their test coming up or thinking about doing it... honestly its not that bad, be relaxed and ride your own ride, try to forget that there is anyone ther. thats the advice that everyone gave me and it seemed to work.

cheers Mr. Green Thumbs Up

You shouldn't of wheelied out of the carpark (if you did at all...). Iirc, the examiners have the rights/power to revoke your new license/certificate thing for upto 30 minutes after the test is over. Also they can 'ban' you from taking your test for a certain length of time.

By the way, what was the minor for?

woops! well i never knew that LOL.

an the minor was for...
when i done my e.stop, i came to a perfect stop in 3rd, and only done a lifesaver to the left before pulling off, when i was surposed to a left and a right.
cheers.!
