Do you service your bike on time?

I was talking to someone the other day about service intervals, and he was saying how he just changes the oil and filter when he can be bothered.
Just wondering how many of us stick to the service schedule religously, and how many of us (for one reason or another) dont?

Depends how much of a PITA the job is, in that :

Brakes , I do it when they bind or I cook off the fluid.

Oil since its an easy 10 minute job about 100-150 miles after the service mileage.


Valves , a long difficult tricky job which means I often go 100s of miles above the service interval.

err, what's a service schedule? My bike has had 3 oil changes in 48000 miles, got it's original spark plugs changed at 43000 miles, it gets the brakes done when required. The only thing that gets done on a regular basis is new tyres fitted (and even then I am sometimes running on slicks before he gets new shoes )

I do the oil and filter when it's due if not sooner because I thrash the shit out of it. I tend to do most of the other stuff about once a year.

Valves on the VFR are being left alone until I am presented with evidence that they need doing. This is backed up by the oppinion of the one motorcycle mechanic in my area whos oppinion I am even vaguely inclined to trust who says any time he's checked the tappets on one, they haven't needed touching.

Yeah I do. Oil and filter every 600 miles - takes minutes and costs only a few quid. Valves I do when I feel like it. Other bits as and when they are needed.

Yep, every 6 months - oil (ain't got a filter), valves and whatever else on the list.

The book says that - I know it's the schedule for when the bike is raced but for the amount it costs for 2L of oil and a filter (about a tenner all in) I don't mind.

Gives me a chance to give the bike a once over as well. I enjoy working on the bike and giving it some TLC.

So what is "the best tool for getting an oil filter off in the world."

The dealer did my last service on the Versys because it was due one soon after I bought it and they did a price but I used to do the plugs and oil on my ER5. I have got one of those chain thingies for getting teh filter off and either they are shit or I am shit at using them. I hate and dread using it.

So is there a better tool, in the back of my mind I seem to be thinking about a huge socket thing???!!!

on time? i tend to well over service my bikes. my GSXR gets 2000 miles oil changes with fully synth. its cheap enough to do with the low mileages the bike does (4k a year max usually)

125 got serviced, ok an oil change before I sold it.

SV650 has got a full service history, and is serviced as recomended in the book.

I think of it as preventative maintenance. Fix things before they might go wrong.

Regular oil changes, other than that fix when required. I know it is not the best way, but I am such a lousy mechanic that any task which may be considered small would probably take me ages, and result in the bike being off the road for a fair while.

If I had two bikes, which I may well have one day, I would stick to the schedule properly for the good bike (since it would not be the primary transport), and keep with the lax servicing for the shitter.

No I look after both bikes.

If i'm not riding, i'm in the garage making sure my bike(s) are in top condition.

Everything is checked at least once a week.

when i own 4 strokes, (only own 2 stroke bikes at the moment) i do oil changes every 1000 - 2000 miles valve clearances are usually checked about the same time, if if shims need to be changed then that happens the next oil change,
pads ect get checked when i think about them
chain is lubed every time it rains or every week,
brake fluid is changed atleast 2-3 times a year

tyres on the other hand, i get well below legal limits before i even consider changing them, and then i usually wait until i get a flat
or find a really good deal,

My bikes speak to me.

Sometimes it looks like this

Then it gets a clean and an oil change.

Oil and filter changes every 5-6000 miles, brake pads done when needed but the calipers get a full strip down when I do the pads. The EXUP gets serviced every 2k miles but that is a piss easy job and I do it because they are renowned for going wrong.

Other than that it's new tyres when needed and a full strip down clean twice a year to keep on top of things.

Religiously for the bike. Warranty, an' all that - I'd rather keep that up and have them pay for any niggles that might be hiding in the new design.

The car... heh... not so much.
Service light's not been off for a coupla years; I feed it oil when I remember.
