fine for riding with no plate?

Hi guys,

I rode home from loughborough to london today only to lose my numberplate en-route. In the eventuality that i got pulled over, what would be the maximum imposed fine i could get charged with? Obviously I'd plead ignorance and it's obvious where the plate has snapped off.

Suffice to say, my bike the most inconspicouos out there; loud pipe and xenon lights so that's asking for tug. Luckily when i got to london, it was rush hour so i wouldn't have noticed any police and they wouldn't have been able to notice.

So does anybody know what the max fine is. Bike's now at home in london awaiting new 9x7 plate from rory plates - unfortunately, i left my docs at my uni house in Lufbra so that rules me out from getting a legit plate anyways.

Also, on another topic - milky oil filler cap and emulsion on the sight glass doesn't necessarily mean i have blown head gasket do I? Coolant level has been constant throughout the last month since i last had an oil change? Anybody reckon it's just condensation because I use the bike every day on short journeys and it's had no signs of smoking from the exhaust or anything like that? Just need some reassurance.

Doubt you will get a pull, I did 600 miles with no plate on my gpz750 (which as you can imagine does attract police attention) with no pull. But in the event it does happen you'd have to have a real arse of a cop to nail you for it if a bit of the plate is still hanging.


Sounds like emulsification, I get that all the time when I only do short across town blasts, take it out for 100 miles and check your oil when you get back in. If its still on the filler cap don't worry because the filler cap isn't exactly in the oil flow, but if the sight glass is cloudy then start looking for oil in your radiator.

Wow Im amazed you got done for it, you must have been really unlucky or lippy cause I would be stunned if I had got a fine for something like that as it could happen to anyone at anytime, many years ago I hit a bump in the road whilst riding quite fast and my whole plate and light came off at night, I rode home with it in my jacket tho if I had been stopped I think I would have got done, you will have to learn to grovel, sorry officer, glad you pointed it out, It will be fixed first thing

I didn't get done for it, i was hypothesizing the fine. I got home OK which is the point and yes, i made sure my bike was roadworthy before I left, i did the oil check, tyre pressures and chain tension.

The oil emulsification is mainly cos i only did 2 mile journeys each day with a lot of cold starting. Oil level is still level so i reckon it is condensation - there's no steam or blue smoke from the exhaust so I don't think that i need to worry. Checked the sight glass and it's clear now after doing 140 miles.

Same fine as for having a number plate that is too small, they actually do you for having no plate. Used to be £30 no points, don't know what it is now.

On a car max fine for no plate is £60. It's £1000 for having a dirty, unreadable plate, though.

If you get an arsey copper, or arouse suspicion they can get you on a couple of other more serious offenses if they want. Not 100% on what they would be, but "going equipped to steal", and / or "perverting the course of justice" would make sense

Attitude test, pass it and you should be okay in most cases
Fail it and u could end up arrested.

Most cases you would just get a correction notice for it to get it sorted. As long as you know the Reg and it all comes back clear and your ID checks out okay


Chap on roadwars had had his plate ripped off by monkeys at a safari park, he got let off after they established the car wasnt stolen. Was an expensive Volvo i think (fool for taking it into a safari park)

I remember that episode of road wars so that's what flashed my mind, but i couldn't recollect what fine he got? It was evident in his case where the plate got ripped off, and in the case of mine, you could see the screw attachment and velcro reinforcement. I blame having a 9x7 plate acting like an air brake against the wind. The velcro on the plate was rather weak so i'd gotten some heavy duty 3M stuff from john lewis instead of that crap from wilcos... 8x6 plates are the right size for velcro.

Just told normally they would issue a correction notice, but as it was an expensive car they will trust him to get the plate replaced
