any suggestions appreciated...

MY Honda CB250N Superdream was blowing the main fuse intermittently (approx weekly, but getting more frequent), I inadvertently put a 20A replacement in and all was well for about 5 minutes until something that wasn't the fuse melted!

All the electrics had been fine (lights, brake lights, indicators, starter, horn, killswitch, etc), though now the whole thing is dead.
Apart from not being such a muppet in future Rolling Eyes , can anyone offer any advice as to how to start trying to revive the thing? (or if it's worth trying!)

The bike owes me nothing and it seems a shame to scrap it - mechanically it is fairly robust - but if I can't get it going cheaply then I'm sure some of the rarer parts will sell on Fleabay relatively easily.

like I said, any advice would be gratefully received...

the fusebox may well have burned up, otherwise the fault is between the box and (likely) the main switch. It shouldnt be too hard to find, and its not a huge repair job, even if its burned other wires in the loom. You will need to cut out the damaged wiring and splice in some new wires.

Check that none of the wiring loom has become trapped or cut-through anywhere. Places to look are:

The steering-head lockstops (No1 favourite)

Coming out of the headlamp bowl

Under the tank

Under the seat

Finding the melted part would be a help. Follow the damage away from the battery until you find the fault.

1: remove fuse
2: wrap fuse in tinfoil
3: replace fuse
4: carry on riding. ignore any white smoke.

You might laugh but I spent hours with another racer at the side of the runway trying to find a wiring fault that kept popping fuses. In the end, someone jokingly suggested putting a bolt in the fuse holder and watching for the smoke. After a while longer the guy got desperate and did just that - and we saw smoke coming form a wire trapped behind his fairing.

I don't recommend this as good diagnostic practice though Very Happy

Many thanks to all for the advice, as soon as I can get some time (work can be so bloody inconvenient, not to mention having to move house on Monday as well) I'll start systematically testing/replacing wires. Nothing to lose by having a go, though I'd hardly describe myself as confident with all that electrickery-type stuff Confused , seems like the devil's work to me Twisted Evil . Wish me luck...

Yh my Honda cb250n superdream does that every week! its because the wiring which goes under the fuel tank squashes the wires which makes it trip! need to more wires down out of the way!

Hope that helps
