I've got the 'power down kit' fitted by dealer before purchase - it consists of a torque-stopper screw which attaches to the cable holder and wire lead connector that attaches to the 'self-diagnosis system connector' -
If I remove, is there anything I need to adjust on the bike?

Any comments on the difference in power/performance/acceleration when derestricted?

I've had a restricted ER5 and an unrestricted ER5.

On the unrestricted it had a higher top speed and slightly quicker exceleration. When I was restricted the top speed was 92mph.

I saw out the 2 years, I saw no reason to risk it, but it is a personal preference.

Many unrestrict and never get caught, but there are forum members who have been caught and been classed as driving without a license.

I had a Versys (practically the same engine) and did ride a restricted version of the same, the biggest difference is top end and mid range roll on.
They are restricted by means of cable travel and as you say a black box plugged in to the diagnostics port, this is to help fuelling at higher revs as it is fuel injected, it stops the engine running too lean.

But be careful if you are on a restricted licence, if something happens and the police take your bike as part of there investigation, they DO dyno the engine for power and it is noted in the report which your insurance company will recieve a copy of. This could then invalidate your insurance.
My son had an accident recently and they dyno'ed his, luckily he had not deristricted it.

Thanks for replies and words of wisdom - I've still got the best part of 2yrs to run on A2 licence so more curiosity than anything.

Tbh, if it doesn't make a huge difference to the lower end, there doesn't seem much point in derestricting yet anyway (i.e. 90 mph current top end fast enough for a noob)

There is not much difference at all up to about 60mph.

Leave it restricted, keep safe and enjoy.

Do you mean with the restrictor fitted the engine runs more rich? Because I've read elsewhere that the restrictor makes the engine more lean.

Laughing

You think doubling the power won't make much difference to the 0-60.

When i de restricted my Speed four the difference was mind blowing and probably half the 0-60 time.

Speed Four: 170kg 100hp

ER-6f: 180kg 70hp

If it's a cable stop jobbie, you'll be able to give it more throttle. This means you'll be able to bounce it off the red-line quicker. Achieving peak power quicker, hence faster acceleration. Also mean you'll get more top end because you'll be able to give it more fuel at the top end.

But as another member said, people have been caught, their bikes tested and their anus' have never been the same.

Update -

Had my bike serviced for the warranty by Kwaka dealer the other week - they loaned me a new (un-restricted) er-6n for the day.

Oops - forgot to mention to them mine is restricted and so I got a taster of what my bike will be like when it's de-restricted.

The difference is amazing - had a big grin on my face riding it back down the M56 from the dealers.

Soon had that wiped off my face when the dealer phones me to say they had found a screw in my back tyre - wanted to charge me £140.00 for new tyre (inc fitting) - managed to negotiate to about £115 + cost of service (still felt like I'd been chumped though).

I've realised not really worth the stamp in the service book. Still, the loan bike was a laugh.

Never mind the fact that your licence is invalid as you are outside the restrictiions.

Thats what you think. Wink

I gave the police man sexual favours in order to keep quiet about it being un-restricted Wink Laughing

Anyone know the answer to this question?
