BUT, just because it's legal, doesn't mean that you should ride on almost bald tyres. Tread depth has a big effect on stopping distance in the wet.

Tread depth plays a big part especially when going round r,bouts in the wet even at the slightest tilt speaks one with experience, ouch!

To be honest I don't think the tread depth is too important until you hit deeper water. If it's just light rain on the road surface then there isn't any water to displace into the treads. I think the worst thing about a tyre with very little tread is the quality of the rubber at the end of the tyre's life which is why an almost bald tyre can still be quite dangerous in the dry and especially when cold.

I think the worst thing about a worn tyre is that it will be squared off making leaning the bike a bit more tricky

I could count the corners of my 20 mile commute on one hand. It's a bloody shame is what it is, because when I do go for a hoon I have to do it on bloody squared tyres.

Same with mine - and with it being 140 mile round trip - at least 90 miles of that is pretty straight - it eats tyres and squares them somewhat- even with the harder compounds in the middles - about the best I've found were the Bridgestone 020 but i'm currently back on 014s and will get a pair of 015s for the summer

Where did you quote that from? As i was led to believe that cars is 1.6mm accross 75% of the tyre around the whole circumferance. Where as bikes it is 1mm accross the WHOLE tyre, not just 75%.
