and the beast will be shoehorned into this lovely frame...
https://img150.imageshack.us/img150/9066/20122008196pk4.jpg
well, my weekend was particularly awesome, and made slightly more awesome by spending more money for once...
went out in town, copped some bird whos house i was meant to be staying at that night, but this was at like 1am, so i went back out... met some of my other friends in town, and ended up crawling back to one of their houses because they said they had good central heating (?).
wake up in the morning by being poked a little by his younger sister (no, about 15 stone).
anyway, got up, ate some stuff, and started chatting to his dad...
who is doing up an RD350 to customise... so i bring up my mito and mention 350's dropping into them...
''i have a spare engine and you can have the entire running gear for £50''
SOLD! FUCKING SOLD! thought i...
''hmm, i think i'll have to accept that offer'' said i, smoothly, without weeing myself too much.
so now i have...
complete engine
YPVS valves etc
2 NEW pistons
2 barrels that have never been seized or seen a rebore (althought they need honing... at work... for free)
carbs
complete loom of electrical doohickys.
so my grand total for getting a cagiva mito, and an RD350 YPVS engine is £150
cheapest mito 350 ever...
along with these...

the guy also said its a ''Y2'' engine??
or something like that... mean anything to anyone?[/img] ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. Nice one bud, I'm glad you're finally turning into a 350 again, looking forward to further progress. ____________________ R.I.P. Tareree Shiimi, 1985-2008 |

another update... this time in the kitchen cleaning area.
with the help of mr. muscle, a toilet brush (new), the oven, and a bottle of enamel spray paint, i went about tarting up and cleaning the barrels a bit.
all done in the kitchen mind... using a hairdryer to dry the water off the barrel after cleaning, and an oven to bake the enamel paint on.
https://img401.imageshack.us/img401/7489/20122008203es1.jpg
and the bores... never rebored, nothing significant in the way of scoring, and nothing a good honing wont sort.
https://img401.imageshack.us/img401/6205/20122008204xv4.jpg
https://img151.imageshack.us/img151/7658/20122008205im8.jpg
the only thing that im thinking ''hmm'' about is the head.
obviously at some point its had some shit in the cylinder, and has pounded a nice little pattern on the underside. trying to fix this i know will fuck up my compression ratio, so i was thinking of just tidying this up a little so no swarf can come from it, and leave it as is, in the hope it will coke up during use.
any reason i shouldnt do this?

rebuilt crank... only thing really.
engine reassembling? its a 2 stroke hardly difficult
and i have ALL the parts i need apart from the exhausts.
stock exhausts = no setting up
and whats a dynojet? £200 tops?
read halfway down the first post
for the electrical part, i was thinking of cutting everything off the RD loom apart from the engine running bits, and cutting the engine running bits off the mito loom, then just laying them over eachother. ie: 2 looms connected to the battery.
saves a lot of hassle then. i could even just not bother with cutting anything off and have 2 looms in there ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. There's a picture on BCF somewhere of a Mito 350 with underseat exhausts, but for the love of god I can't find it. |
was talking to jackdim about the whole zorst side of things, turns out its going to be a bit cheaper than i thought!
i was picturing £700 custom exhausts, but turns out it'll cost about £3-400 for them to be made up, then about £180 for it to be dynojetted etc.
still at a standstill at the mo though, due to xmas and all...
just finished cleaning out the barrels using scotchbrite, cutting fluid, and a shit load of WD.
came up really nicely! theres some very light scoring to the barrel, but nothing thats likely to cause a problem. if it does, i've got 2mm of rebore to play with
ive also decided to polish up the heads and keep the barrels black. just finished nitro-morsing the head, and im going to paint the YPVS letters red
no pics
at the moment im concentrating on the engine mounts. any suggestions?
i saw doug2wheels or something looked like he had some bolt on mounts for his, so the frame didnt need welding?
it must be possible, so thats what ill aim for, so i can return it to a 125 if it needs it for some reason. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. Not wanting to piss on your bonfire Matt but what is this big obsession with mito 350's.
If you want an NSR250 buy one.
Everyone knows rd's are unreliable tuned and make less than 50bhp as standard so why do people bother?
i can sort of understand the RG500 into rgv frame for the GP500 rep but even then the 4 cylinder 500's are hard to get reliable power from and make no more power than my NSR as standard.
I'll get my flame suit.

250cc powerbands are too thin and race bike like for my liking. If you get 70bhp from a 250cc it has a very peaky nature, and your going nowhere fast below around 8k rpm. Does anyone want to ride a bike all day long in a 2-3000rpm power band with all the noise and vibration etc.
More cubes for the same power makes for an easier time because:
1, You have more midrange
2, The powerband is normally wider and less sharp
3, More overrev in some cases, tuned bikes tend to peak higher and then drop like a stone power wise.
4, The biggest reason is that something like a 350YPVS engine will run maybe 20k+before even a top end re-build depending on the state of tune? If you look at bigger 4cyl 500's RD/RG, you can get 35k+ out of a motor with no more than routine servicing on a std ish example.
What does your NSR250 make power wise Mick?
I know a YPVS is an outdated design with cylinder liners, small reed blocks and a low rpm ceiling compared to later more developed 250cc engines, but some of these features like the ability to re-bore the barrels cheaply are what makes people like them.
Also 60-70bhpw isn't really stressing them too much or making them that much more maintainence intensive like a 70bhp NSR/RGV etc would be.
Lastly you can expand the capacity of a YPVS350 to 400cc, and with Banshee parts and aftermarket stuff you can take them out to 500, even 600cc! Most 250cc sportsbike's can't be stretched to or run reliably for long even if its possible with a 300cc big bore conversion.
a std YPVS350 should be at least 50-52bhp r/w, and thats the same as an early RGV250, so it just indicates the difference in engine characteristics between them. As for the RD/RG500's id be very suprised if you find a good std one that does not make 70-75bhp r/w. With tuning the RD has topped 125bhp, and the RG500, 145bhp all wheel figures! |
