Motorised Bicycle!?

Hi Guys,

Having spent most of my life as an avid cyclist, i've recently been diagnosed with quite severe arthritis in my knee joints, i still want get on my bike but obviously cant pedal like i used to!
Have found this website www.tigertoothbikes.com . They look good, wondered if any of you guys had one...heard they do the job but want to get an opinion, am aware it needs registering, i just think they look better than a velosolex, and cheaper!

You will need a CBT, provisional licence, insurance and full UK legal Motorcycle crash hat to use that in the UK.

Is it me or does this sound a bit like an advert? .......one post first one about a product he's seen and wants us to comment on and or look at.

but I'd probably buy a shaft drive push bike and in the middle of the frame stick a small chainsaw engine in the middle of it and a small fuel tank covered with some black plastic , so that you can hide it with your legs if the fuzz spot you , and turn it off quickly...

Or just buy one of those electric assist bikes..


But then I have no need as I have a proper motorbike.

thanks so far guys, with out sounding too pathetic, i cant really handle a scooter as they're a bit too bulky. I realise they need MSVA-ing probably, but i'd like a project.

The bloke who used to live opposite me had one of these, a couple of weeks ago he was pulled over by the police and had the book thrown at him.

If you're going to bother getting it road legal then like others have said you will need to do a CBT etc anyway.

Look at a small lightweight geared 125 (or even a 50). They're somewhat heavy to start with but once you get used to the weight you'll be fine. To be honest I can't really see those 'motorized bicycles' being that light.



Either that, or build your own. Start with an MTB, get an electric hub motor (plenty available) and some batteries, build it the way you want it.

A bike is designed to take the energy produced by a human being, about 120rpm giving no more than 2hp at the crank. These little motors will be banging out 10-16hp at about 7000rpm.
Do not be surprised if the frame breaks.

If you're an avvid cyclist, I suggest having a look at an electric pushbike - these can be set up to aid pedaling as well as entirely replacing it and are fully road legal without tax, license or insurance if you buy the correctly limited models.

thats more like it!! How much? the reason i haven't gone for an electric is i'm not exactly loaded and the most affordable batteries are sealed lead acid and make the bike weigh the same as motorbike!!!
The motorised one appeals as in my experience a 2 stroke packs a punch and im told the bike weighs 29kg which is managable...
I read some posts on a forum not long ago (may have been an american one) about one of these and the chaps had racked up quite a few hundred miles, one "WalMart" Bikes, if they held up i'd hope a barracuda or a raleigh would.
Since then i've been looking for one like yours mad4it028 but they're all restoration projects, and im not into that.

If you're still into the petrol engine idea why not build your own? Start with a normal MTB and a chainsaw engine (already has a small inertial clutch built in). Remove the pedals and drive the front sprocket directly from the engine (keep all the gearchange mechanism etc).

Not sure how well it would work but it'd be a great project!

Getting it road legal isn't really that much bother, it'd have to be SVA'd, and you'd have to have brake lights, indicators and running lights.

Not sure if V-brakes would be good enough - you may have to go for discs or drums.

I was actually on about removing the pedals entirely and welding some footrests on to the frame.

Good idea G, you could remove the entire drivetrain (engine and CVT transmission) from a minimoto and run it with a fixed rear hub?
