I refuse to pay a tv licence as everything on the BBC does not interest me apart from top gear, which I am perfectly willing to wait and watch on Iplayer legally after broadcast.

However, how may I seize other broadcasting?

Need links, google seems to give me link farms.

But they don't know that. When the TV license van comes round, i believe that it searches for a signal being transmitted to your house. Unless the website owners blab on your, there is no way of knowing. Unless your ISP watches to see what websites you go on, or they setup a system that flags the user when he/she goes on a dodgey/illegal website i suppose.

When the person with the list of people without TV licences you mean. They have no authority to enter your premises and you shouldn't sign any legal statement they give you. Don't even give them your name. I still get letters addresssed to "MR blah blah or the Current Occupier" It would appear too much work for them to obtain the current occupiers details without them sending a canvasser round.

If they turn up on your doorstep, tell them to piss off.

Interesting, but surely if you were taken to court you could use the arguement that it is 20 seconds behind the TV broadcast.

Unclestoo - They don't have to enter your premises, they can see which houses are receiving signals without you even knowing they are there.

If they are anything like the baliffs, if you open the door then they can enter your premises. They don't need your permission. They just can't break an entry (so if your door is unlocked then they can enter)

Correct me if i'm wrong, its just what i was told by some dimwit Razz

I believe baillifs carry out enforcement for the courts, i.e. have certain powers. TV blokie used to work for the post office, hence they still try that one to gain entry. They would need a court order to enter your premises and, as above, could find it difficult to get one in the name of "The current occupier." Just don't invite them in! Also, if the sods walked into my house they would get the claw hammer first and questions later.

It is sent live, there is no editing. It will probably take the 20 seconds for the information to be sent from BBC to satellites, to some server, and then to your local server, and then to you. At a guess.

And as someone said, it is a list of people without a TV licence, or more accurately, a list of address. Currently, TV Licencing can not detect whether or not a house receives TV signals (maybe once the digital switchover has occurred).

They know when you haven't got a licence because it won't have been renewed and the system sends out a letter automatically. And then again, and again, until months and months later, they send someone out.

The chap who comes is on commission so it is in his interest to set you up a licence, usually DD. Unless it is March, then it is a CC payment (for the end of the financial year).

I was thinking the same thing about paying to watch TV the other week.
I sent the TV Licence people this email using a fake name and address cos im clever like that.

Subject: General Enquiry
Message:
Why should i pay for a service i do not use?
I do not watch any of the television channels, online content or listen to any radio that the bbc provides.
If 100% of the license fee goes to the BBC then why should i purchase one?
If i only watch TV Stations that are funded by advertising then no-one needs my money.

Got this as a reply a few days later.

Dear Mr Bob

Thank you for your recent enquiry about the TV Licensing needs for programmes broadcast by satellite.

Under the Communications Act 2003, you need a TV Licence to receive or record television programmes. This means that a TV Licence is required to receive BBC, ITV, Channel 4, 5, satellite or cable television.

If you use your TV to watch or record television services broadcast by satellite from outside the UK, you are legally required to have a TV Licence.

Absolutely!

A couple of years ago my sister got about 20-odd letters from them saying she hadn't paid her tv license and would be fined if she didn't pay immediately. Every time she replied, telling them she didn't own a tv, they just hit her with the exact same response letter along the lines of "that's what they all say so we don't believe you". Also kept saying they were going to send someone round (in their A-Team-style detector van or something), but nobody ever turned up.

True, i also noticed that when i bought my telly from Dixons (well currys.digital) they asked for my name and address. When i questioned him as to why he needed it, he said that they are required to take it as they have to pass it onto the licensing authorities. So they know if you have purchased a TV, so if you have no license then you are going to get sexually abused by a man in a suit thinking he is important.

On a slightly different note here’s a challenge for you.

Is there any way you can watch American channels online here?

My Missus is from Houston and wants to watch college football but I cannot find anywhere that does it.

We also had a slingbox setup at her mums in Texas but it was too slow when football was on so it broke up and was unwatchable.

I have tried some proxy sites but they don’t seem to stream live feeds.

Specifically it is University of Texas football we want to see.
