Yep, I love playing poker. Texas and Omaha. There's a tourny down my local pub in about an hour. Wish me luck.
I've not been playing long and have a lot to learn though. ____________________ Current: ZZR1400

I play for real money when I get together with the lads at someone's house and we all put in a tenner and exchange for chips, or we play in school during our "study periods". That's where the craze began.
Playing poker with fake money is indeed very different, but you learn a lot from it especially when you play in online tournaments. However it's much harder playing with people in person cause you have to keep a straight face even with that pair of Aces Something I'm not great at |

Up untill last week i would consider myself quite a serious amateur poker player.
I play at my local poker club, where i have won a couple of 80 man, £20 quid tourneys (£500 ish quid for about 6 hours of work), i also play(d) on PKR and PartyPoker. I also quite reguarly win the weekly uni £5 buyin tourney (just an evening of fun more than anything). When playing online i try to use a bankroll strategy, ie playing with only 5% of my balance, so if im playing 5 dollar 6-man tournaments i need 100 dollars in my account to take the losses, this works if you are a solid player and are disiplined.
I started out years ago when late night poker was on channel 4, i had played bits and pieces before then but that got me into hold'em tournaments, I never really play cash games, i dont really have the skillset for that, i thrive at putting someone to a decision for their tournament, in a cash game they just pull out more cash and keep on going if they loose, in a tournament when your out your out.
It took me years to realise the importance of position, i used to raise certain cards regardless of what position i was in and paid heavily for it when you run into a monster.
Just play premium cards, nothing speculative, except maybe suited connectors (76 diamonds etc), i tend to just limp in with small pocket pairs and hope to flop a set and double up, raise premium hands preflop.
That all said im quitting for a while, i find it hard to control my emotions when playing poker (online especially) so i ended up tilting away my whole bankroll, and found it hard to deal with people making terrible calls and rivering me time and time again, I couldent get my head around players that would have say 2 of a suit and the flop comes 2 of their suit, so one card to the flush, and you floped somehting nice, a set, two pair, you bet heavily to make the pot odds bad for them (ie they shouldent call in the long run they loose money if they do) but they still call, nothing helps them on the turn, then they call another massive bet and river their bloody flush .
If you enjoy it read up a bit more, Dan Harrington's books are good, i have them in PDF if anyone is interested.
For the time being ill just play the weekly £5 uni game for fun, ill leave the online and casino games untill i finish uni and have a bit more time i learn more about the mathematics and generally spend more time becoming good.
Oh yeah, play money games as the guy said are just a crapshoot, just deposit 20 quid in a online room and play 1 dollar tournaments to improve, play tight-agressive poker and you will be profitable...

I have a texas holdem account on facebook, but I have no idea how to play it.
Andy plays in my profile, when he runs out of "money" in his own account ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Yeah I play, mostly on PKR the odd night. Used to play alot during school and we still meet up for buy in tournaments at someones house which are always good fun.
I am not that brilliant atm, used to be better and started making profit (very small amounts) online but then got bored of it and went off it for a while. Come back to playing 1-2 nights a week on PKR, beer next to me at the PC makes a good evening. I want to put some effort into becoming a good player for when I am 18 to play in real life tournaments.
TheDonUK, bad players who will call anything do my head in. Used to have one in my group of friends at school, would call if he had anything even if the pot odds were ridiculous, most annoying thing was when he managed to pull it off on the river.
Forgot to add, just recalled the good memories of playing in secret in many lessons, we used to play 5p and 10p blinds, no coppers allowed. Most of us had £3-4 in change on us, made for a really good game. Funny times when we were busted sat round in a circle somewhere with a pile of silvers in the middle, all holding cards and betting. Some funny excuses were made up on the spot while someone grabbed the pot to hide it.
Facebook poker is pointless, it is so blantenly fixed its unbelievable. I played it for 5 minutes once, got all amazingly good hands, somehow everyone else had good hands aswell which ment there was always someone to call you. Because it is like that in real life. ____________________ ***Previous: GPR50, FZ750 *** Current: Monkey bike, yella SV 650 ***

I see your words but that is all they are, words because I do not speak the language. Are you saying you have gotten sick of loosing or of winning? If you are sick of loosing to people who bet wildly on bad cards I suggest your play is a little automaton like and predictable (Not that I know what I am talking about). |
On the contrary, you sound like you may know what you are talking about, thats why i can admit now im not a very good player.
Im tired of loosing badly to very loose players.
Check this, If i have 99 as my initial 2 hole cards and someone else has AK, if we go all in at that point i am roughly 51% favourite to win the AK 49%, if i loose there, well it was a coin toss, im not too bothered...
Its when throughout the whole hand you are something like 80% favourite, you are betting enough that any sane person has no business calling and they defy the odds to pull out a miracle card on the river, thats pretty hard to take and it tends to tilt me emotionally, something i have to work on obvously.
Anyway being a gambler and all, im popping down to my local poker room in 10 mins for a nice afternoon tournament, will i win? doubtfull but im going to try my best to make good decisions and generally enjoy my time there rather than seeing it as a purely money making endeavour... I know exactly what you mean. That's the problem with online poker, it's 'too accessible' to dumb players IMO. That's why I've given up on playing online. I sometimes think the poker software on such websites engineers the dodgy rivers to make it more 'entertaining', but if others weren't making stupid calls then it wouldn't get that far anyway. I've lost count of the times I've lost a really good hand to river that makes four suited community cards.
Another thing with online gambling is that different buy in levels mean different things to people. You could go into a $100 tourny, against somebody who sits there all day playing many $100 games. I'd be very tight in a $100 comp, but to somebody else it could mean very little to them, like a $20 tourny would to me. I don't know if I've made sense there, but you should get the jist of what I mean.
Oh yeah, saw a Royal Flush last night too (Wasn't mine though)! ____________________ Current: ZZR1400

I've played different kinds of poker since I was like 8 (very loosely hence why I'm so bad) and I've never seen a Royal Fush
I have seen straight flush, quad aces and the likes though... |

Just got back,
Played solid poker throughout, After about 2 hours half the field was gone, the guy to my right who was complaining all afternoon about shitty cards moves all in with about 3/4 of my stack im next to act, I have AQ Clubs, i move all in over the top for some protection, and then the guy who had been picking up monsters all night calls us both with KK, The guy who made the initial raise had A7, so my raise was correct i knew i had him beat, not much i could do about the guy behind me waking up with Cowboys...
Now that loss doesent annoy me at all, i played good poker and ended up loosing to a monster, that i can live with, it does suck but thats the game.
Im going back tonight for the evening tourney, its only a tenner and im feeling confidant.
/wishes himself luck
Edit: Oh yea, if you get a royal or straight flush you win a £140 jackpot, i have never seen either in years of playing... ____________________ [Current Bikes - GSXR-750 K5 & C90-97 ] [Previous Bikes: Runner 125, YBR 125, GS500, Bandit 600, Hornet 600, ZX6R-99, C90-99, R1-99, XT600E-04, GSXR-750 K4, CRF250L '16] |
