I've got some cash for christmas and am on a tight budget and fancy a PS3. I know the 40gb doesnt have backward compatibility and loses the card reader and 2 usb ports.

The card reader and usb ports I can live with and I've still got my PS2 if I feel the need to play PS2 games.

what I want to know is if the 40gb loses anything else over the other models and can it be flashed to allow backward compatibility?

Unless someone can find the the 80gb for £250 all in as it seems used PS3's are selling on fleabay for more than new ones.

You still get 1 USB port on the 40gb (used to charge the controller) so you don't loose all your USB's.

I don't think you can flash them to allow backward compatibility, they took out this function (along with card readers etc) so they could sell the console cheaper.

If you can get an 40gb considerabley cheaper than an 80gb, and you aren't bothered about having the dualshock controller then get a 40gb and upgrade the HDD (a 2.5" SATA laptop HDD) to a larger one.

The 40gb has 2 usb ports on the front and the sixaxis can simply be replaced by a £25-30 dualshock controller.

I'm on a 40gb and still dont have much need to upgrade the HDD (even with lots of pics and music on there) but its an option to upgrade Thumbs Up

Cant think of anything else it doesnt have, Though the setup on the back of it is different from the 60gb's so beware if you are buying one of those clip on LED bars.

Well the only thing i have installed on my HDD is game saves and games that require installing (and then PSH) but some people use them as basically a media centre so have all their films, music, pictures etc on there.

Sell the 3 games that come with it on eBay for a minimum of £20 each and you make back £60, with the free delivery that play.com always do you have yourself an 80gb for £229.99. You could raise the price you sell the games to £25 and get a PS3 for £214.99.

I played the Motorstorm Pacific Rift demo off the PS store and its just as bad as the first one so sell that. But Fallout 3 is worth keeping, can't comment on Saints Row 2 as i haven't played it before Razz
