Gotta problem with an ebayer, i sent them a perfect condition GTA IV which was well wrapped & i got the below email. What should i do? Bit pissed as it could be a number of problems like it got scratched in their console or they dropped it etc.

Argh.

Thanks for the prompt postage. Unfortunately I just discovered that the game is scratched and as a result it jumps or freezes.
Any chance you could replace it with another one? It is not that much fun playing it and not being able to move to the next level if you know what I mean.
Look forward to hearing from you.

was it properly pushed into the nipple on the dvd case?

*edit I would say ask him for a photo of the scratch's, But he'd just take a photo of any old scratched cd. That is unless the picture is so good you can see the Microsoft XBox 360 hologram on the inner ring. Thumbs Up

Yup, it was pushed in properly & for it to 'fall out' it'd take some force. I'll ask for a photo. Thumbs Up

I would ask him to post you the cd back for inspection.

Maybe he had a copy of GTA4 and bought yours and is trying to fob you off with his old scratched copy??

I've seen a lot of shops that repair cd's while you wait. costs a couple of quid tops.

Gamestation did mine for £1.50 a pop
All depends how badly marked it is.
First go the game worked ok for a while, then froze.
Still the same 2nd time.
But my fault, I did tilt the box whilst playing Rolling Eyes

As the man said above.. As long as its the clear side it can be repaired.

Louise be aware Gamestations repair machines are shite. The lads in the Gamestation near me actually send people down to my shop for the really badly scratched games.

We can easily take even the worsed of the nice rings 360s can put on disks out. After its been repaired you wouldnt know it had ever been scratched.

I had a similar situation with something on ebay about 3/4 years ago.

Sold it in perfect condition, had a new case fitted not long before it was sold and you could pass it off as new (obviously i didn't, i aren't like that)

Well it sold for about £40 less than a new one (still £70 though) and i got an email (Well it was my dad that sold my stuff for me at the time) back saying that it was in bad condition, it didn't work and he had to take it to a model shop (it was a servo for a model car if your interested) to get it repaired...but it still didn't work.

Now firstly it had a new case fitted and was posted wrapped in bubble wrap so no way of it getting scratched there. It didn't work perfectly and modelshops don't repair servos, you have to send them back to the manufacturer for repairing.

Well we asked him to send it back for us to inspect and he did. We opened the case up and he had attempted to solder a new cable on (3 20g wires sold it stuck together go into the case and solder on 3 small tabs next to each other) and he must of used a giant soldering iron because it was a right mess. He had actually de-soldered some other components on the PCB.

Well we sent it back to him, not sure what my dad said but it was something along the lines of 'F*ck off!' Laughing

Never got any bad feedback Cool

my bet is on them replacing a dodgy copy that they had and screwing you over.

if i sell stuff on ebay i mark it with a security pen or take notes or serial numbers etc.

tell him to post it back so you can check the damage and also so you can get the label security marking confirmed that it is your disc.
tell them all discs are marked with a special dye that are bought in batches like alpha dot and that once you have confirmed its your disc and the damage has not been caused in transit/by there machine you will refund them.

also tell them that you take scans of the disc so you can check on new marks scratches.

make it sound like you do all these security meaures because you proved that someone tried to rip you off before and you refunded them only to discover it wasnt your disc and then you had to get the police involved so this just saves time.

lots of bullshit and they may leave you alone if they are conning you.

Thanks guys, the above would be great but he did ask me to replace it with another GTA which makes me think he hasn't got another copy otherwise he'd just ask for a refund.

Wink

Also, I read a thing not so long ago that said Brasso is quite good for getting small scratches out of CDs Laughing I don't know how reliable that is though.

If anyone does have some Brasso and a crappy CD I guess they could have a go.

Might just as well use toothpaste.

The shops use skimmers for deep scratches, they take entire layers of plastic off. A DIY approach would be to use varying grades of emery from very rough to the finest, then finish off with Holts Micro-compound (or something similar). On the clear side only.

According to the link at the bottom of that page (Clicky) toothpaste didn't work very well.

I've also read about Brasso being used on clear plastic. Could be good for getting small scratches out of a motorcycle screen.
