https://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20081230/tuk-call-for-use-of-car-speed-limiters-6323e80.html

It's going to happen, not for any high fallutin reasons, but because any government - by definition - seeks to expand its control, and the British government knows that the British people will grumble in their arm chairs but otherwise roll over like submissives, as they always do.

CfIT vice-chairman David Leeder said on Tuesday: "This important report shows the very real benefits to motorists from the introduction and use of an ISA system - not just in road safety but also in terms of fuel and money saved."

This is the lamo reasoning that these people come up with it: just assertion, no evidence. The report, for example, doesn;t show that an ISA shows "real benefits to motorists in terms of fuel/costs", the most it could show is that going slower saves fuel - if someone sees this as a great benefit, they can go slower. The ISA doesn't even enter the equation unless we're talking about forcing it on ppl - which David Leeder, meely mouthed scumbag that he is, hasn't got the balls to come out and say.

Anyway, enjoy 71 mph whilst you can. Becuase you won't be going that fast for much longer.

I'm pretty sure that when this stuff comes out into every day circulation on every vehicle there'll be plenty of tips on how to disable it! Wink

There's always a way round these things if you try hard enough, just think of the number of ways you can now stop yourself getting caught by speed cameras!

Hi

They are not saying for them to be compulsory either in that report (although no doubt various anti car special interest groups will call for them to be compulsory, so making driving less pleasant).

However what you have missed is that the research into ISA is being done in Leeds by a guy whose view of it on bikes was that it was irrelevant as bikes should be banned (hence why the bike ISA came along several years after trials of large numbers of cars, and probably why it was such a useless mess that was rapidly dropped).

All the best

Keith

Nah just a back door method to introduce road pricing,

Ie first its not manditory then it is...

So all cars / bikes have GPS (via Galileo satellites*) tracking , then completely by coincidence of course a extra bit of software of module is to be added such that it becomes manditory and charges you £5 per mile whenever you drive whereever you drive.

Its weasle method TBH ,in that they know there is no reasonable method to disagree with this (oh think of the children) and thus they use this method rather than the overt manner nobody wants.

Galileo satellites are kind of dumb in that they decided to build it first THEN find reasons to justify the existance, namely due to the bribes given to EU commissars .

Hi

No need at all for any kind of vehicle tracking for ISA.

All the best

No need for ID cards either doesn't stop the government introducing them does it? ,

EDIT

You totally miss the point.

Speed limiters would work perfectly well with no form of tracking (adding tracking would mean a massive amount of extra work which would be of no benefit at all to speed limiters), hence as a back door method of introducing road pricing it is irrelevant.

All the best

I got the gist from a government propaganda article that it would not be a 70mph limiter (easy) but it would work for urban areas and as such 30mph zones , kind of like how they have in Saudi where on the back of road signs they have beacons which do this , though Saudi men just stick the incar transponder in a faraday cage.

Yes, and still no need for any kind of tracking at all. Unit just needs to know your position and has no need to record it anywhere let alone pass it back in batch or in real time (which would massively increase the unit cost and the running cost).

Which is easy to do, and also very easy to spot. Expect anyone who is travelling quicker that most to get pulled and hit with a large fine for attempting to pervert the course of justice or some such offence.

And for cars with the difficulty of overtaking such bypasses would do little. Would probably only take a largish minority of cars to have them fitted for it to be virtually useless to overtake (as you would just get caught behind the next living brain donor).

All the best

Maybe if it is combined with enforcement....

but I've noticed something odd this year in that although I've done lots of ferrying people about in a car I've not been breath tested this year at all, while every year prior to 2008 I've been breath tested around the new year period.....

It only bothers me because of the inconveience as I don't booze in the UK at all now and never drink and drive anyway.

Hi

True, but with likely hideous penalties for interfering should it be made compulsory then it would take virtually no enforcement and would be a lot easier to spot than someone vaguely over the limit.

All the best

Not a chance of this becoming compulsory... They make too much from fines. The politicians will happily protect 'civil liberties' if it's beneficial to the tax take. The only way this kind of device will make it to the streets is if we end up with the green party in power or if the insurance companies start to demand it.

at which they have a manditory subscription or licence to be allowed to use that service, like a TV licence , which raises them even more money, and as such you can get 2-3 million drivers with a £60 point fine and extra insurance costs..

but if you can get £100 off all 30 million drivers you are quids in .

That's not how they work... they take steadily increasing amounts so no-one notices rather than a one of massive new tax. There'd be a poll tax moment if they expected everyone to buy one of these devices and then pay an annual subscription. It still wouldn't leave them quids in as they'd have to install and maintain backbone of the system (either roadside or nav based).

What ever do you mean ? , something like this?

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/4016444/Drivers-to-have-10-year-health-checks-under-driver-licence-reforms.html

whereby ALL drivers are required to pay £80 a pop to be health tested to see if they are fit to drive?....

Looks like a cash generator to me..... simplest method would be to ban seat belts and airbags , natural selection for the win.

I always thought a long, sharp spike sticking out of the centre of the steering wheel might also aid natural selection for the double win. Wink

For a start these are proposals. Secondly "up to" is a term the media love to use in scare stories. Not forgetting you can choose not to take the test.

You're going to look a bit of a cunt the first time you get rear-ended by another car...

There is no infrastructure in place nor will there be for every very very very very very very very long time. Just mapping the roads and allocating a speed limit for it will take years and billions of pounds/euros, then there is the implementation of it. you will all be long gone before it even gets off the ground let alone actually being used.

It would be far cheaper and easier to get the 16-24 year olds to stop killing themselves and others on the road, even wearing a seat belt that many, even in this day and age, don't bother to do would dramatically cut the number of deaths on the road.

Quite, I remember reading somewhere it would only take limiters to be fitted to 5-10% of cars for it to slow everyone down. Shocked

What you all worrying about, they cant slow bikes down or make them brake to slow them as it would be far to dangerous to the rider, if you were taking a bend and suddenly your brakes came on it could quite easily get you killed, this is for cars and such, not two wheels

Hi

A bike system has already been built and trialed. And applying the brakes mid corner in a car could equally have nasty effects.

All the best

You cant be serious, braking on a bend in the wet on a bike is suicide and in a car its a skid, I would like to see the trials if you would be so kind sir as to paste the url, cheers

So the brake on the bike and you skid and lose control. Same can happen in a car (or very nasty lift off oversteer if the front is already sliding). Can cause an accident for bikes and cars. Those pushing the system don't care as they expect people to be going so slow that it won't matter.

Report on the motorcycle ISA is here.

Note at this stage the system just shut the throttle and didn't operate the brakes, but still a nasty thing to experience in times of poor grip.

All the best

Keith
