hi, someone gave me a 12month xbox gold membership for xmas and ive never used it before despite having the 360 for ages
So, i bought a longer ethernet cable as the supplied one was too small, connected one end to the 360 and the other end to the belkin wireless router that is connected to the modem.
All works great
But the cable has a long way to go, and i was thinking why doesnt it work so that i can plug the ethernet cable in my laptop and because the router is sending 'internet' to my laptop, really it should work, right??

But no, i tried it and it says connection not there, and when i test the connection it says 'IP address - failed' or something along those lines.

Any other ways i can connect easier without paying £60-odd for one of those wireless thingies.
P.s. sorry for my lack of computer knowledge and sorry if this is a bit hard to understand

I tried that and it didn't work, it just couldn't find the IP address no matter what i tried.

In the end i got a wireless adapter thingy (the official 360 one) for about £35 posted off amazon (not the marketplace, it was actually from amazon)

They were out of stock though so had to wait about 10-13 days for it but i'd rather wait than spend £60-£70 or whatever they try and charge int he shops

You're original post is talking about ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) which has to be set up manually. It would have worked if ICS was up and running, but you have to leave the laptop on.
As posted in another thread, here's how I did mine. I snapped up the router for £5 (you have to wait for the bargains) and installed DD-WRT, then ran it in WET(Wireless Ethernet Bridge) mode.

righhhht, thanks for the replies. i tried the first guide and it worked. Well, i say worked, its currently in the bedroom due to it being closer to the router, however the point of me trying to set the wireless-ness up was to have it in the living room.
Anyway, like i say, it did work in my bedroom, i bridged the two networks like it said,
i started by plugging the 360 into the router, and the laptop into the router, bridged them together. Then unplugged it all, just had the ethernet cable from the 360 to the laptop and it signed me into xbox live nd connection all went through on green. All good

Then i moved everything downstairs and set it up EXACTLY the same, the internet on my laptop still works so i know its recieving it ok.

But for some reason im getting the IP address message, but with the exact same set up upstairs, it worked
On one rare occasion, it worked, but soon went off again. But when it did work, the network to internet error came up .
Any ideas on what could be happenening.
