Apparently some bmws and goldwings have a reverse gear, supposedly the startermotor engages on a special gearset and pulls you backwards...
Which bikes have this and am i right in the starter thing? could somebody expand on it as i'm just curious really... maybe i should buy a lighter bike Razz

Hi

Yes the Goldwings use the starter motor to power a reverse gear. Some of the Russian BMW copies had a proper reverse gear Shocked .

All the best

My mate can reverse his bike, he has a aprilia mx50 which uses the same engine as the rs50. If he bumps it into gear when rolling backwards it will reverse, its very dodgey and quite scarey but does look smart. He's got 20mph out of it going backwards (in a straight line of course).

Flipin eck! that sounds a bit scarey! i was thinking about it after trying to manoeuver the cx with me and my girlfriend on it i thought "wouldn't it be nice if..." don't suppose there is anyway of retro fitting a reverse gear? Razz
I can understand a goldwing having one though, wouldn't fancy trying to push one of those anywhere, especially not up a driveway!

The goldwing thing is run off the starter motor, rather clever.

The old russian flat twins had a reverse gear because they were designed for sidecar use. They were probably used in some small cars too.

Hi

Trouble with the Russian things was that they actually left the reverse gear in the solo models.

All the best

One engine design. Multiple Chassis. 70 years until "modernisation".

I think goldwings even have electric stands don't they?

I was just wondering if anyone here has ever dropped one? And if they did, how on earth did you get it back up Very Happy
