Ok, last night on the way home from work, in the last 200m or so, weird noise from the engine started. I thought it was something caught in the wheel because it happened regularly e.g. something on the wheel hitting a fork each time it goes round. I left it without checking.

This morning, I set off and heard it again, though I better check what it was. Couldn't see anything. Revved a bit and it was happening when not moving, oh dear, engine problem.

I pop the fan cover off to see if it was that, nope. I take the other side (belt cover) off to see the outer variator had come loose. The nut was loose, and all the different bits were aswell. Lots of metal shavings and the splines on the crankshaft have been damaged.

Here are some pics.

48, shows the crankshaft with damaged splines and all the metal dust in the background.
49, shows the outer variator and weird star thing that should slot into a slot but the slot has completely disappeared! Just worn away shiny metal.
50, shows the shiny metal
51, little random bolt I found inside that I have never seen before even though I have had the casing off before.

I have already ordered the outer variator and star thing, I don't know what to do about the crankshaft. If I order a one, second hand, its £20 but means a complete strip down of engine. What do you guys reckon I should do?

how badly damaged is the crank get the new parts and trial fit them. if theres lots of play the crank will have to be replaced also try to find out what caused this has it been taken apart recently was the end bolt lock tighted back on? your pics are not very clear so i cant se how bad the damage is.

sorry for the bad pics, they are from my crappy phone.

It was taken apart about 2-3 months ago by my mate. The nut was tight but not threadlocked on. I will be sure to buy some this time.

What if there is a little bit of play? Not to much but not none?

Also, the shaft that is damaged is not the crankshaft, it is the drive shaft. Not as bad as crankshaft but still requires full strip down of crankcases etc.

i would re assemble and lock tight the nut also this probably needs to be torqued up then check for play if there is play could cause a lot of vibration and more damage if you are un sure get a second opinion off of some one that knows a lot about bikes.

if the thread is not stripped you might be able to get away with just a new nut , make sure its torqued up and put a dab of loctite over the nut to hold it on

when you talk about play do you mean in the shaft the variator is on ? there shouldnt be any play in that , might mean youve warped the crank Confused
