Someone did a mini Ducati NCR rep which made a 180cc V-twin by splicing two C90 lumps together. Wish I could find the pic cause it was utterley pointless yet brilliant.

How do you go about splicing engines into each other?

Obviosly its a high-skill task, there was a article in Classic Motorcycle Mechanics and this old fella did engine mods himself.

Added one or more cylinder to stock bikes.

One of the best I've ever seen is a IL4 200cc Mobylette built in turkey.

I wouldnt mind a MZ 500 twin or 750 triple .

I think the hardest part is getting a crank to fit. Any ideas how its done?

If it is a 2 stroke, I'm not sure that exhaust will be very effective.

Hi

2 stroke cranks (well, bike ones) are generally pressed together. If the crank is made up so there is a central main bearing with a couple of crank webs into which the neighbouring big end pins are pressed then it would just be a case of sourcing several of these centre sections to press together (vibration might hurt). A competant machinist could probably make up these sections.

Can't think of a pressed together 4 stroke crank (although no doubt there is one) which would make joining them more difficult.

There is also the issue of how strong the crank is. For example say the basic engine can put out 6000Nm of torque, and transmits that to the gearbox via the clutch from the end of the crank. If you weld your 3 cranks together and get 18000Nm of torque then you need the end of your crank to be strong enough to transmit that toruq (even before you need a clutch or gearbox to take it).

Think people have bolted together stupid number of chambers from Mazda RX7 rotary engines together to make very large engines. No idea how they run.

To me the interesting bit isn't whether it is quicker or not (and the advantage of more cylinder is that you can rev it harder and get power that way), but the amount of work and effort that has gone into it.

There is a guy who made a couple of bikes by merging several engines. This V12 using 2 Z1300 engines as a basis:-

He also did a V8 based on 2 Z900s (in the background of that pic) and there was a V twin using (I think) a pair of Honda C50 engines.

Remember that French guy who built a model Ferrari, complete with working V12 engine?
