Hi,

I'm looking at cleaning up the fasteners on my Hornet 600. the spindle nut and spindle bolt head are both rusty and looking nasty. This is because last time I had the wheel off I cleaned them up on the wire wheel - they must have been coated and now they just rust really fast!

What would you do in this situation? Titanium nuts are like £20-£30 from what I can see... sod that! This approach also wouldn't solve the fact that both sides of the spindle that you can see need attention.

Cheers.

How about coating them in lacquer like they obviously were from the factory?

Wouldn't it just come off really easily when spannering?

Well it's survived this long until you wire brushed it Wink

+1 for above. Good choice, quick delivery. Had SS P Brackets which I could not find elsewhere.

The bolts on my CBR are inferior to those on my R6 prior to it. Strange, as I thought Jap manufacturers got their fastners from the same supplier.

Mr Honda seems to see fit to charge 400% more than standard nuts and bolts, my fairing bolts on the CBR went walk about checked in with Honda they wanted £1 each! , I went to Braben and Rudd and got them for 7p hex head M4 button head nuts in shiney stainless.

Which is probably why I've been using mass produced car parts on the Africa too... 8ft of stainless steel 51 pipe exhaust for a car £25 ,14 inches for a motorbike £42!.

Cheers for the link. I'm not entirely sure what I am after (size wise). Do they sell spindles on that site? I also wouldn't have a clue what size nut i'd need.

thanks

The fairing fastners on my R6 were starting to look a bit shoddy, was bored one evening and decided to spray them with the silver 'straight to rust' paint, hoping to change the lot over to some new ones when I had the funds....

But the paint lasted very well, after 2 months of use, they still looked good, after that I sold it so can't say how long they would stay looking good, but it's cheap and easy to sort.

When tightening, just be gentle - place screwdriver/socket/spanners in place gently etc...

Rough em up a bit with a sandblaster or sand paper, then lacquer em... Eventually spannering might scratch the lacquer off, not so much if you lube them with a squirt of WD40 or somesuch before working on them.

Should last a while though.

Alternatively just polish them with Belgom Alu, the waxy coating it leaves will keep em rust-free for a few months, and only needing another quick polish after that to get em back to clean.

That sounds more like my solution. I could mirror polish them then too.

When you say they'd only need a quick polish after a few months to get them clean do you mean with belgom alu or with something else? Will belgom alu resist cleaning? I know I wouldn't really clean the spindle on my bike but i'm thinking it would be good if I ever decide to mirror polish my rearsets for example.

Cheers for the great suggestion!

I doubt Belgom Alu is good enough to withstand winter corrosion. It's fine at giving a long lasting mirror shine to polished metal, but I doubt it will offer the same resilience even in comparison to cheapo OE bolts.

That's right, they have a zinc coating which, once damaged, rust away very nicely Sad

Stainless FTW.

What does everyone think to getting the head of the spindle and the nut chromed?

Be probably easier/cheaper to get them supplied in stainless and then polish them.

I don't know where to start with things like this? Do you have any useful links that may sell spindles? cheers

You'd be surprised. Obviouslly it will need to be combined with the usual WD40/FS365 regular lashings, but you'd really be surprised how far this will go.

And parts that don't get exposed massively to corrosion will just stay clean without the need for so much WD40/FS364. e.g. I did my rear shock bolts on my SZR like this, they were rusted and totally brown. I polished them on the bench mop, then rubbed em with belgom. That was a year ago, and they are still silver, albeit more of a "led" type tone now.

Or zinc plated.

Only thing is then, it will increase how big the head of the nut/bolt is.
