What do you think?

Also, I'm doing a presentation on Carbon Fibre for Physics at the moment and wanted a pic of a 100% CF bike where you can see the weave. I've seen pics of the tyga kit and a Ducati on here somewhere but despite searching can't find them.

So has anyone got any pics?

I voted tacky, the problem is real CF bikes look the business in the sports section, but it's only a matter of time before cheap rip off parts that are made to look like cf but are plastic etc can spoil the look for genuine bikes. If that makes sense?!

Actual CF fairings? Meh, can look quite nice.

Stick on carbon? Well, it's not for me.

I know what you mean.

I like bits that would already be there being made out of CF.

But when people start getting onto CF stylee stuff that just sticks on as extra weight ala alot of Duke Monsters in particular, I lose interest.

Looks cool and does just the job.

Motorcycles on the other hand, look good but more for bling than anything else.

I have no problem with it if it is functional, its when its stuck on and actually adding weight that I think its wrong. I can't see what the point is? In some instances it does provide some crash damage protection but generally looking at how its attached it would fall off the second it touched the ground.

Better in moderation.

OPPRacing are the guys you need to look for for full EOM carbon fairings, or even race carbon fairings.

as mine, the frame and swingarm protectors are there for a reason to protect them both, the paint on the LHS of my swingarm has already started to rub from me putting the sidestand down with Sidi's on.

they're both stuck on with a lot of silicone and they won't be going anywhere in a lowside etc. Thumbs Up

Damn, they even do a full 7R set!!!!! If only I'd known earlier.

The full carbon fairings look nice but its like a singular painted scheme on a bike, it needs contrast. Then again for less than $2000 on a 6 or 7 grand bike. Thinking

Indeed, even on moto-gp bikes I believe they often don't bother as the bike is under the weight limit anyway.
For anybody less than a moto-gp/WSB rider, it's unlikely to make much difference. For most smaller teams, the cost with the associated risk of crashing is unlikely to be worth it, I'd have thought.
For people not risking pushing their bike that much, it doesn't seem worth spending that much, considering other things you could spend the money on.

So it comes down to general tartiness; thus I class it in with mini indicators and the like Smile.

Carbon-Kevlar weave crash protectors can be very useful.

On the first bike everything is hand built including the 60 degree 964cc V-twin. The project started 1991.

The complete weight of the bike is 214lbs.

Its in Swedish, but easy enough to work out Wink

Would appear the SS is going against the trend a bit, as it's actually used nd dirty with tarty carbon fairings. For the weight you'd save, you may as well just have a shit before you get on. Or only half fill the tank.

Hi

For bodywork, if replacing GRP or plastic then can be a small but useful saving in weight. Although most aftermarket stuff if probably cheaply done with a poor resin and not really any stronger than GRP. And for race use most would probably be painted (while for tarty road use they probably have laquered it to make it shinier).

For real use then it can save a very decent amount of weight. Can make the frame and / or the swinging arm from it (as well as wheels). Cagiva used a CF frame in their 500 GP bike in the early 1990s. Bimota used CF frame section in the SB8R. Very light and very stiff, but difficult to modify once built (unlike an alloy frame where they can pull it straight, or cut sections and out weld in replacements).

All the best

Keith

I like the look of race bikes in pre-season testing, before sponsors, but only because they are machines of truly extraordinary performance and actually require bodywork to be made from that.

On anything else, it's just tart factor. In that case, I usually believe less is more; it's what you don't see as much as you do. And to actually look at carbon - it's not really that pretty. Twill weave is okay, when it glints in the sunshine, but, I don't know....the weave sometimes look like a weird tartan pattern. Stick to trinkets that the normal eye don't notice at first.

Stick on carbon is especially bad in that regard. I mean, why? Armour maybe, but the stuff you get off the peg doesn't have fantastic abrasion resistence, especially as they'll last one spill before looking horrendous. I'm in half a mind to rip my frame spar covers off, but they're kinda intergrated with my paintwork.

i think as a structural material its good, nice and light,
as for fairings i dont think there is a real need,
britten did well in the early 90's producing his bike
using carbon when he could... which was just about every where,
excluding his hand made engine which acted as a stress member of the bike,
due to the whole bike being so light at the time and producing good hp,
it was pissing all over the ducatis and what not
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/40/Britten_V1000.jpg/800px-Britten_V1000.jpg

even the wheels and swing arm are carbon fibre

heres a vid

That looks surprisingly like an RSV...with carbon fibre fairings on Laughing

See that one I'd say looks good because the decals here and there break it up quite nicely, but the ones that are purely carbon fibre look wank Thumbs Down
