PostPosted: 22:32 - 03 Jan 2009    Post subject: Domain Name registration question Reply with quote

I am registering a domain name for my wifes 'business'.
(when i say business - she is self employed, but has not actually set up a company as such .. so its not that serious)

Anyway, I have found the name and when I go to register it they ask "is this a business or consumer domain name ".

Does it really matter ?
Whats the difference ?

Any thoughts or advice appreciated.
Thanks, S

Doesn't matter - or at least, I've never been asked the question when registering domains. Who's it through?

Don't know anything about them, but I still can't see why they need to know.

You are normally given the option whether you want your details publicly displayed.

If you do it in a company name you could be stuck when it comes to making any ISP or DNS changes. They often request company letterheads etc when you make the requests. They will be (understandably) cautious when changes are requested.

Also as mentioned the whois will so co information on their records.

The key difference is simply whether its being registered in the name of an individual or company name, .i.e. is it an indivual or representative of an entity that will own or control it.

Unless you have an established trading name that your protecting by registering the domain then just do it personal not business.
