Just read a report at The Register

It states on the last paragraph that Boris Johnston has asked TfL to allow motorbikes in the bus lanes. Further delevopment to his promise...

The Register wrote:
Transport for London has published its sixth annual report into the impact of the congestion charge on the city's traffic, with the surprise finding that fewer cars are entering the zone but congestion is as bad as it was before the charge was introduced.

The number of cars entering the original congestion zone is down 21 per cent with 70,000 fewer cars recorded each day. The western extension to the zone has seen a 14 per cent cut in car numbers - down by 30,000 cars a day. But despite this drop, congestion within the zone is back to the level it was at before the charge was introduced in February 2003.

The problem is not too many cars but not enough road space - water and gas replacement works and "traffic management measures to assist pedestrians and other road users" are to blame. So no more cycle lanes or pedestrianised roads then?

TfL said the worst example right now is building work at Scotch Corner in Knightsbridge.

In response, Boris Johnson is asking TfL to re-phase traffic lights - he will review their proposals in the autumn. Johnson will exercise new powers to fine utilities and wants more powers to control their activities. He has requested TfL bring forward plans to let motorbikes use bus lanes - an idea that's been trialled for some time.

The congestion charge raised £137m in 2007/2008.

The full report is available as a pdf here.

Hi
Is it possible

Quote:

that only cars that pay the charge are counted?
If not, then is it possible that a large majority of people who stopped driving into the central zone (shoppers) simply restarted if they were part of the western extension, which made MORE people exempt / paid a reduced rate in ALL the congestion zone.
So these people simply used the car all across the zone for shopping again because they could?

and inside the western zone some main thorough fares were
exempt, so traffic still clogs up the side roads and slow down everybody in the zone and passing through?

Not to mention that thames water seem to be digging up and turning EVERY major road in west london into a contra- flow...........

.........way to go thames water... Middle Finger

Supposedly there is a provisional date of 5th of Jan 2008 when TFL controled bus lanes will stop sending fines to bikes using them..

I dont believe it untill it materializes

Errr. Most London bus lanes are controlled by the local borough aren't they? Not TFL. So maybe this will only be the primary red routes or something?

Anyone else come down from Haringay to Camden? Amazes me just how many different times they manage to have on the bus lanes. Seems like it changes from all day->7am-7pm->7am-10am every hundred yards.

BTW. The next demo is Friday Oct 24 1pm. Hyde Park Corner. Meet Park Lane car park. Be There. Bring 3 friends. Spread the word.

You have to be even more careful in bus lanes than on normal road. Cagers will not look for you there. I have been commuting through london for well over an year, nipping through traffic at silly speed cutting it close (To close) hitting mirrors (mine and the cars!) basically riding like a twat because it was fun and got me there quicker. My only accident in London was putling along in a bus lane at about 30mph coming up to a camera when the women on the road next to me turned into me and I hit the camera.

The number of times I have been nearly written off minding my only buisness riding legally in bus lanes.

On a side note, I have never not used a bus lane if it is there regardless of legallity. Not once have I recieved a fine this is comuting to london 5 times a week and crossing the city to Ealing or the Ace Cafe.

Linky to roads covered by this change

https://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/finesandregulations/10151.aspx

So to be honest it seems a bit shit... I bet the local boroughs make more money by people mistakenly thinking they can drive in bus lanes. I think the easiest thing to remember is if it has a double red line in the bus lane you can ride your bike in it.... I think.

Being a rider in London your best bet is to check out the bus lane signs to make sure whether your permitted. That is providing they update the signs ready for Monday. The bus lanes on my route to work which will be bike friendly have yet had the signage updated.

Yep, signs round my way have been updated. Shame there's one major bus route that I'm still not allowed to use, but it will still make the ride home a hell of a lot safer and quicker. Thumbs Up

Anybody know what the legal position is for riding in the lane if the sign does not show a bike symbol as being one of the permitted bus lane users? I assume it would be OK, but you never know!!

You can't use it if that's the case.

Anyone see the news report on BBC last night, 6.30? In summary:

'Ooh, motorbikes bad, cycles good, poor cyclists and pedestrians will be even more likely to be killed by the nasty evil motorbikes now...'

I commute using the A23 Streatham onwards, I join the London Road from Green Lane, that part of the A23 was de-restrcited a few months ago.

About 11December all the signs were being changed, I thought WTF? it looked like the bus lane was being restricted again. I checked up on the TFL site to find out what was going on.

Went back to work in the new year and all the signs had been changed BACK so I was again allowed to use the bus lane.

So some poor bugger had to change all the signs TWICE, what a waste of public money that was.
