i can afford to have 1.8 golf as a first car. imsurance and car isnt a problem, i can comfortably afford it but would it be stupid to have one as a first car?

Why would it be stupid? 1.8 is a good size.

Only because when petrol goes up again (which it inevitably will) you'll wish you'd bought something smaller.

It's not like the 1.8 is that rapid anyway. I've driven a mk4 1.8 GTi and whilst it has good midrange, I got out of the car thinking "is that it?"

Because you're comparing it to a bike. Laughing

It won't be THAT fast to be honest.

I drive a 2ltr Focus, it's not that quick to be honest. If you want a quick car don't buy a family car, they are far too heavy.

As above. If you want a fast golf, get a VR6.

I had a 1.8 Scirocco at 18 and it was dissapointingly slow and handled quite badly.

No I'm comparing it to many smaller cars that I have either owned or driven.

I have drove a 1.8 Focus a couple of times and the golf really didn't justify a "GTI" badge.

Cars I have owned have not been over a 1.25 litre. So with an extra 600cc I was expecting a lot more.

The only thing I was satisfied with in the Golf was the handling which was nicely refined.

True, but the smaller cars are much lighter. They just lose out on the top end.

@ HL you may as well just buy and insure a cheap car then spend the money saved on repairing/ stunting the R6.

Also, why not go for a Polo instead of a Golf? They're lighter. Mine's a 1.4 and, while not fast, is surprisingly nippy and good fun to drive. It also gives me around 45mpg instead of the low-30s which you would get from the 1.8.

Depends which 1.8 golf you're on about. If you're talking about a 16v mk2, stay the fuck away, because there are precious few left and I imagine you'd wreck it. Laughing

Even 8v mk2s are quick compared to modern 1.8s.

However, if you're talking about a boat (aka anything mk3 onwards) yeah, they're solid, reliable cars and NOT fast enough to get you in any bother.

I couldn't care about petrol, its the road tax that pisses me off.

As mentioned; any recent ones are a bit plaid and boring (with some exception for the top GTI etc ones).
Work out how much it will cost you per month/week over a year and decide if it's worth it for you over a cheaper car.

That's the thing. It costs a lot of money to have a fast car (one that's not always broken, anyway) - yet you already have two fast bikes. Why not save your money and get the diesel model instead? VW turbodiesels, along with Peugeots, are amongst the best in the world. I can also imagine insurance being cheaper.

Yep, due to the weight they make excellent boat anchors Whistle .

Sorry, I dislike diseasels. Would recemmend that anyone who is considering one takes one for a drive to see if they can put up with them.

All the best

I got a 1.8 for first car, was fast for the first week, and now its just boring, looking to get a 2.0+ car or a 1.8 gti turbo in feb, hopefully that may add some excitement.

Dirty diesels have a lot of advantages over petrol motors, especially if you get it chipped. The torque some of them produce is unreal.

Speed in cars is not the same as on a bike.

You'll need a very fast car to get anywhere near the wow factor that you'll be hoping for.

My type R, fair enough not the most powerful car in the world but 62mph in 6.5seconds so no slouch by today's mainstream hatches still felt slow and only came alive when well past the speed limits. In the end a car was just a means of transport and anything larger is going to ass rape you on the holy trinity:

Petrol
Insurance
Road tax

By contrast a smaller car with less hp may handle better and give you the 'its alive' sensation when driving. Do not underestimate the power (all 38bhp in my 998cc case) of an old mini. By far the best handling car I've owned and albeit slow on motorways, cramped and uber basic so much fun to drive.

We have a 998 Mini as a daily drive. Its done a few day trips to Canterbury and back (we are in Wiltshire), maintaining an easy 70Mph on the motorways for hours at a time. Today, it did my 40mile commute in sub-zero conditions with no complaints.

Mini for a first car should be a legal requirement Thumbs Up (Oh, and its not my first car its my ninth or tenth having previously had much faster machinery).

I have a 1.9 turbo diesel 405 for my daily driver and thats shit slow and has no torque.

After my 2.8 Capri its big petrol engines for me, want a 3.0 406 coupe for the daily drive now.

1.8 is hardly the most powerful thing on earth....getting a 300bhp 200SX would be silly as a first car.
