Car problem, or was?

Helped a friend out on NYE with his car, when i gave him a lift back he said i could fill my tank as a thanks...

I have a 1988 Scirocco, 1.6GT. Since owning id say the only niggle was the fact it was struggling through the winter with this cold. Once warm its fine, just thought maybe i had a minor problem.
Anyways, i was gonna go to Shell, as i only go to Shell or BP, actually, anything NOT SUPERMARKET shite. Im sure it is different.
So i get £15 in the tank, i have a gig in Brum in the evening. I start her up, fine, going for about 5-10mins and when i get to the lights she cuts out when coasting.
Hmm, ah well, maybe the cold or something, try her but she doesn't fire well.
The way i got her going is foot to the floor while starting. I had to do this to and from Brum, she didnt want to tick over.
The next day she was a bit wobbly, using handbake at lights etc. Ive gone through a tank and filled up with premium....now she idles.
Coincidence, or shit fuel?

Hi

Pop the bonnet up and look at the air filter houseing. You might find a winter setting on it (might be a lever, you might take the lid of the airbox and turn it round). Cars can and do suffer from carb icing, but easily solve it by having the air intake for the airbox from near the exhaust manifold (so it takes in warm air). Sometimes these pickups switch automatically, sometimes manually.

Not saying it definatly is, but it is a simple things to check and easy to fix.

Aren't they fuel injected? My '89 1.8 Scala definitely was.

Could be the fuel pump, I've heard they can go.

No this is a basic carb set up.
Maybe it was icing, not sure...

My old '84 golf had a waxstat that operated a flap on the air intake - in cold weather it pulled air in over the exhaust manifold, in warm weather it pulled in through the normal air intake.

There's a fair chance that some kid has attempted to route the air intake to only take in from one position at the front of the car, to make it faster bruv.

Nothing wrong with supermarket fuel, just that your car is shite. If the air intake doesn't sort it, start with a full service then troubleshoot from there.

Do you have the original auto choke SU carb fitted? Unless they are in 100% tip-top condition, they are notoriously bad for cold weather idle problems; many have fitted a manual choke weber replacement. Personally, i had 2 GTIIs, one with the standard SU, one with an aftermarket weber. One suffered cold weather idle problems, one didn't.
How is your fuel filler neck? Particles of rust can get into the fuel system, i had an extra inline fuel filter fitted to mine and was amazed at the amount of crud that would build up in it.
