cant decide which car i want next, doing my head in.
1. scoda fabia vrs, 1.9 tdi, 130hp, ins group 9, roundabout 7k to buy with 30k miles. can be "chipped" to apparantly give 180hp, more torque, and same economy. looks quite understated though:

2. focus st170: varied opinion on the looks, however i think its quite cool. 2.0 petrol with "apparantly" 170hp (some are a bit less, aparantly) interior is bril though if you can get one with the leather recaros, the one i loked at was 04 reg, 6.5k, heated seats, cd changer, switchable TC, ect. too heavy though?

oh, and a fiesta st my brother might sell soon. his one has the optional interior; without it the standard car is prtty rank tbh. but inside is a nice place to be and its pretty damned quick, 2.0 153hp. and being as its my brothers i know its been serviced, not thrashed too much, ect.

but then, no idea what i'll be doing in 5 years ect, cause im gonna have whicherever one for quite a while so i gotta live with it... any thoughts?

Personally, I really dislike Fords so out of those three I'd go with the Fabia.
Thought about a Leon Cupra / Golf GTi ?

I was going to complain about the stupidity of dropping 7k on a car at the beginning of a recession...
...now I just want to know why you believe et cetera is somehow abbreviated to bloody ect.
Sounds like the noise you make when you get a kick to the nuts.

Yes, good point. I wish somebody would of pointed out that my car was about to loose £10k 18 months ago.

Fortunately I have a guaranteed buy back value from BMW. 
If I keep the vehicle for that long and they buy it back then I will be driving something a little more economical.
Doesn't stop me from looking at new cars though!  I got a V8 scratch that needs itching bad, but as you said, it's the wrong economical climate to go splashing out on something I might not be able to afford to run if/when the shit really does hit the fan.
BMW 645s are at a very temptingly low price at the moment though!

Pah even Gordo has owned up and said the recession will last till 2011, except that 2 negative quarters are a recession 4-6 are a depression , I think though it'll last till 2015....
take note the Japanese lost decade is still going on 19 years after the crash.

Only more cost effective if you're running a CG125 on crossplies, and doing all the work yourself.
For just about anything else, offset the fairly small fuel saving* against the price of an oil change ever 3000 miles or less, plugs and air filter yearly, the cost of a crash, the cost of parts failing (face it, bike reliability is shit) and worst of all tyres. A bike will eat through £150 worth of tyres (cheap radials in common sizes) in 4-5k miles, whereas on a small car that value in tyres will last 30k+.
*40mpg from a small car against 80mpg from a small bike, over 10,000 miles, with fuel around 85ppl, isn't huge.
So reasonable fuel saving, small tax saving, big loss everywhere else. And you get to be cold as well.
We may see small bikes getting bought up, but I expect to also see a good lot of 1-3 year old, low mileage mid-high capacity bikes coming onto the market as the recession bites. No good for me, I want a shit 250. |

I suppose it depends on your personal circumstances and what you call expensive, but the standard 180hp Cupra is only 1 insurance group higher than the ST170, and the 225hp Cupra R is 2 higher.
I haven't driven a Golf GTi for about 7 years, but I quite liked it (I was used to driving a Mk3 Fiesta at the time though, so anything would of felt much better!).
The 2.0 GTi doesn't deserve the badge, so if it's one of those that you've been in then try a 1.8t or possibly 2.3 V5.
Or as someone else mentioned, the GT TDi, but be aware that they aren't as reliable as people seem to think and can cost quite a bit should a turbo or DMF go down.

gt tdi? my only experience of them is watching a fairly new one pull away from a set of lights. initally i mistook it for a transit before i looked, becuase the diesel ratlles SO much

NU wanter £1500 to insure my 1.6 x reg fiesta zetec - s 
(i only paid 650 in the end cause my bro's (mates cousins great aunt) works for them 
they're all over 21's only with NU though, apparantly i should be able to coax the underwriters into it after feb when ive passed 2 years
