When changing the cambelt of my car, do I also need to do the water pump and tensioners on this particular model?

It's wise to unless they were replaced recently. I'd at least change the water pump and check the bearing in the tensioner.

I will always change the waterpump with the cambelt in my van, because it only costs £20 quid, is prone to failure/leaks, and needs the cambelt off to change.

I know there's an Audi (V6 I think) that requires the entire frontend of the car to be taken off to change the cambelts. Can't imagine a polo needs the engine lifting out to do it, but you never know, if it was designed to be a really compact car then maybe there's just not room in the engine bay to get at it in situ. Simple answer surely is ring a VW service garage and ask?

the V6 in the A4 wasn't the easiest but it's possible with it in the car.

Polo's not a problem.

change the water pump on any VAG car, they use plastic impellars which are prone to either wearing away entirely or falling off and generally being useless as a pump that shifts water

Mine's a mk4 anyway. I know that the wheel and wheel liner needs to come off to access the lower half of the cambelt, but that's all as far as I know.

I'll replace the water pump anyway Very Happy
