Righto then.

I'll try to keep this to as few options as possible (I know there will be shoehorning).

How secure is your job at the moment that you know of (ie are you in retail/construction etc), or are you currently looking for work?

Lowest demand since 1997 apparently Thumbs Up

Fan-fucking-tastic

We're quiet in some areas but busy in others where i work.
We processed returned electrical goods for catalogs (check for faults, repair if faulty, repackage for resale) and this side is still quite busy. We also repair and resell large lcd & plasma tv's for a few manufacturers. Again we're pretty busy. we were selling about an thousand a week at the end of this year and were looking to up that to 1400. Bit quieter on some other conracts though. customer repairs and some supermarket returns.

(Mind, i've been off sick since mid November so things may have changed......)

You missed "Looking for work, not claiming JSA".

I doubt I'll get anything, but think I'll give it a go if there's no interviews forthcoming in the next couple of weeks. I may contract again for a while, but that's not the direction I want to go in.

Fairly securely employed, until the end of my Apprenticeship (which is a very hazy subject, considering it goes on when and what qualifications I send off...there isnt a specific date.

Im not naive though, they could fuck me off as soon as they liked.

Recently survived redundancies, so at the moment, not massively fussed.

Can see my company not doing so well next year though, as the economy continues to degrade. I work in the airport baggage handling industry, people just wont travel as much or as frequently without as much disposable income, thereby meaning airports do not have surplus for large systems, meaning less contracts.

My actual role is fairly usable, as Im an electrical design engineer....though my skills are fairly transferable, thankgod.

I would probably have a fair bit of trouble getting employment if given the hoof, and would have to settle for a lower paid job doing a less responsible job.

Not good with the amount I owe Laughing

Very unsecure job at the moment current company lost the contract for the site l work on though it is,nt really there fault as the client cut the engineering/services budget from £1.2 million a year to £600k and then want them to accept unlimited liability which is madness for a 650 million pound site.

might get the option to tepee over but the new company pay much lower wages prefering to use cheap foreign engineers for £22k than paying British electricians the going £32k+ rate.

JSA is worth doing long term. Which this is looking to be Crying or Very sad

Just a major ballache. And you get treated like a soap dodging prole.

Just try to avoid mentioning trips abroad, times at uni, or savings. All of which will cause vast quantities of absurd forms.

I was on JSA, then I stopped claiming it, and soon after got a job.

Being on JSA can get a bit too comfy, if you have cash that can be burned by coming off JSA, it does tend to focus the mind to getting a job.

Coming off JSA did give me the kick up the arse I needed to make more of an effort in my job search.

I start my new job on Friday. I think its going to be good, pay is best I've ever had, it may even be a real graduate job. I'll soon find out.

Its a sales job of sorts and there is no such thing as a secure job in sales, but in my first year, my targets are training targets not sales targets, so its like being paid to train.

Aye, quite possibly. But I figure writing 'Searched [site] - No new' 84 times and a trip twice a month is worth the £180.
I'm desperately trying to save for my internship remember, with rents breathing down my neck for housekeeping.
Can't really afford to try that approach.

Besides, going out of my head with boredom and getting fat off browsing is more then enough motivation.

I'm self emplyed so always looking for work but dependant on demand. At the moment it is a bit slack but starting to pick up. The scare mongers are doing no good. It is alright these people going on and on about how bad things are but it doesn't help any recovery. we know things are poor at the moment but being force fed it all the time really doen't help.

There is money out there to spend just people are scared to spend.

I've got three serious options lined up for when I leave uni, with 2 assessment days/interviews coming up. Another job that i'm pretty certain I can secure if I put my mind to it. The luxury is that I know I will enjoy every job on the table so will have the lovely situation to be able to pick what I want to do, provided I get the offers.

I can't see Bonny how you are struggling to find work you've got a decent degree. If I wanted more options for work it's so easy...

Accountancy is tenous , very , firms aren't hiring new and don't seem to be replacing lost staff...

Insolvency however is doing incredibly well.

Maybe you should look father a field , I ended up in Germany and Asia in a particularly terrible period of unemployment.

I know 3 history graduates , they started on close to 20K ,

I know plenty of accountant types and lawyer types who started on 10-13K. Confused

The lowest job i'm looking at starts at 22k, the highest starts on about 26k.

It's not about being a history graduate, i'm looking at jobs that any degree can have a pop at. Which is kind of why I didn't want to tie myself down with a degree that would make me feel obliged to continue into a line of work somewhat related to my degree.

I started out with that idea, but now really like (bits of) the subject. Want to go into evolution, but I need the money to study. And as I've mentioned over and over, I have to save for this shark internship.

I only enjoy travelling when I'm working. I figure, see SA, work with white sharks AND pump up the CV all in one. Just limits my options on what I can apply for.

Plus I never looked into graduate programs whilst at uni since I never planned to be in this mess. Originally I was going to work a summer job to save up some money for the shark thing, then do a masters. Then shark thing would hopefully open some extra doors and I'd of been set.

Recession bit me on the arse, couldn't afford my MRes (I was going to work on spider inbreeding Crying or Very sad), went to Kos because I couldn't find any summer jobs and hoped it would quieten down when people went back to uni. It didn't.

I'm at the great stage where I'm overqualified for shit jobs, to the point that they actually tell me I'll just fuck off. And I've got no actual experience to take to the table anywhere except retail, which is saturated big time at the moment. Can't labour because the construction trade is knackered so plenty of experienced hands... why take the punt.

Theres not a job out there I couldn't do with minimal training, but unfortunately for every job there are 10 people with experience.

Who would you pick....

The only skills I got out of my degree were data handling, numeracy, general computer skills... ooh and I can micropipette damn well.

Bah, I'm not bitter.

True observation, a mate of mine done his undergraduate and MSc in history and im pretty sure he's earning a damn site more than me Thinking .

Thing is, whilst at uni it's great to look at prospective jobs and think "oooh a nice juicy £22k a year" or whatever, but the harsh reality (as im sure bonny realised) is that when you come out and no fucker wants to employ you in your field, your eyes light up with joy at the prospect of earning 15k a year.

My first job out of uni was in a horrible paint/gel coat chemical works in the R&D department working out formulations for various applications. I must have given an oscar winning performace at the interview for that one because my degree is in pharmaceutical chemistry and I didnt even know what a gel coat was.

I only did this because it was lab work, and thus knew that after 6-12 months I'd find something better and more relevant, but would only be able to do so because I'd had experience in a lab - regardless of how irrelevant it was to my degree - instead of pulling pints for 6-12 months (because when asked at an interview what I'd done since leaving uni, I didnt want to say serving pissheads).

It worked out ok for me, I guess I was lucky. The take home message I guess is to apply to absolutely anything that might even be slightly related (school/college tech comes to mind) in the hopes of later being able to go on to better things.

Or anything that is relevant to experience you have had.

I managed to shoehorn my experience to suit a Performance Management job in the NHS (I worked for a year as a "Quality Engineer" at a heat treatment plant during my gap year and had done lots of temporary work for the NHS in all sorts of different departments {ward admin, receptionist, drug treatment services admin, estates projects etc). My degree, Music, had nothing to do with the job except I completed a dissertation using mathematical analysis.

I was lucky, got the job, gained some experience. I started on 16k, three years later I'm on nearly 3x that...

The other message from that is: don't be put off by a low starting wage, if you work hard, prove yourself and are adaptable then anything can happen. Thumbs Up

Aye ghostrider. All sound advice. Just not particularly good at the moment. Every job has 40-50 applicants (Reed keeps track) within a couple of days.

Also, I'm of the second branch of graduates. Those who believe a BSc is worth sweet titty fuck all in your field.

Luckily I have a fair lump of experience in the field, which should help.

But yeh, I'm applying for /any/ lab position at the moment. Got lumbered working as a post bitch for a month (with occasional autoclaving and incubator cleaning) to try and get some lab experience.

Sadly they noticed there was a recession pretty much just after I started Rolling Eyes

They always did when I was undergraduate and thereafter, nothing to do with the recession. Whats the local area like for science jobs in your area industry wise? I think it's best to totally fuck things like SRG/Reed etc and apply to companies directly. If you are willing to relocate then even more so (although companies like Astra/Glaxo/Pfizer tend to recruit 90% from these places...).

My company for example only advertises in the press/new scientist etc on the odd occassion, most of the time the careers oppertunities will be listed on the company website alone. Have a real deep search for any kind of science sector in your area, the place im at now I never even knew existed until I did a deep search of the west midlands area - and its only 7 miles from my house and has been in its current location for about 5-10 years, though the companys origins go back to the 60s.

Universitys themselves are also good for jobs, especially if you find one that has a specialised department i.e cancer studies. Just some ideas.....i've been there, it's not pleasent.

I was working on the old Roche building last (which is now a big 'biopark' full of pharma), I'm a 30 minute ride/train from Cambridge and GSK is based in my home town (well, the big fuck off compound is anyway).

My main problem with applying direct is I have next to no practical skills (then again, this is based on my own stringent standards) so always need to find entry level jobs. Jobs which can be done by the existing workforce if needs be. Lets be honest, who's going to complain about it now.

One thing with applying direct to companies, who am I meant to write to? Director? Lab Manager?

Start simple mate, I know it might sound a tad childish, but to "Human Resources Department/To whom it may concern/The actual Companies name" are all legit ways to start. Theres no way you can always pinpoint who you want to be writing to, as you have no way of knowing if they even have those Job titles, let alone anyone with any sense. EDIT sometimes scouring a company site (if they have one) can lead you to names and titles etc, but again, if its a large-ish company they wont read it themselves.

One thing I learnt is that a lot of companies are far less formal than they would want to appear to be.

You could send in an eloquently written letter, but it will still be a monkey that reads it. Thumbs Up

Why did I have it in my head you were from Wales??

Anyhow, IIRC Cambridge was a bloody hotspot for science jobs so im surprised you're having trouble. Best bet is to scour the surrounding 10-20 miles for science based companys, find out if they have a website and check out their careers section. Definately check out universitites as well. I know for B'ham university the vacancies section can be tricky to find at times so look throughly. Also, you are in no position to be picky with positions you think will suite you, so apply for positions whether you think you match the required standard or not, the results may surprise you, especially if you can just get to an interview and charm them that way.

If you were to write to the company direct without going via their vacancies/careers section, then you would address it to the personnel department.
