Here's hoping this is my bike having all it's teething troubles just after I get it - rather than this setting a trend!

When I dropped it, it wouldn't start back up. The mechanics who got it back to the house for me jumpstarted it and got it going and rode it back. But I tried to start it myself yesterday and it's back to not starting at all (making a strange noise which I can only assume is the starter motor). I was told originally it sounded like a battery problem, so I guess it still is. Question is, can I replace the battery myself? Is that fairly straightforward? Is a battery going to cost the same everywhere or should I shop around?

Even I can replace a battery, and I'm mechanically inept. Mr. Green

Hi

It is a ZX6R? Think the battery is under the seat, but held in place with the bracket that holds the tank in place. It is not difficult to change yourself, although having a spare pair of hands when you remove the tank (to disconnect the fuel pipe) will make life easier.

When changing the battery disconnect the negative wire first, then the positive wire. When connecting a battery up connect the positive wire first. The idea is that this way when you are dealing with the positive terminal the battery is not earthed so touching the screw driver to both the frame and the battery terminal should not cause any sparks.

Battery prices vary greatly. I would be tempted to go for a known make of battery (Yuasa, Varta, etc) rather than an el cheapo special. Strangely for my better halfs GPZ500S the cheapest place to get a battery was Cusworths in Sheffield (cheaper than mail order or buying one at a bike show).

All the best

Keith

Bendy - that's a good sign then Smile

Keith thanks for all the info - you're right yes it is a zx6r. I should be able to persuade my dad to lend a hand! I was just going to buy a battery from the first place I found, I won't be doing that now Smile

The ZX6 battery is just under the rider seat (we, on the G/J/A models anyway). Once you've done what Keith mentioned for disconnecting and reconnecting it, it's just a metter of taking a small rubber bit holding it in off then taking it out and plopping the new one in.

So, anyone know where I would find the battery on a TL-R?

thanks for the tips Smile
I'm hoping a new battery is the sort of thing I'm going to be able to get my hands on pretty fast? Are batteries specific to types of bike or are they fairly universal...

I'll start my battery quest tomorrow morning!

Hi

Different bikes use different batteries. Think the one in the ZX6R is a fairly common one and used in the CBR600 and XJ600 Diversion amoung other bikes (F model used a different battery though, but the same as the 1200 Bandit).

All the best

Keith
