I got a compressor for xmas and I want to learn how to spray/sandblast.. I understand though that sandblasting might be a bit much on a small compressor (I got a 1.5hp/25L)..
also what would I need to spray a frame/parts..

That's much too small for sandblasting, my 3hp 200L would struggle. ____________________ Go back to bed - You have no rights - "Streetfighters ~ Mainstream motorcycling's crackwhore sister." |

hi,
as previous poster says, a bit small for blasting, but would be ok for spraying panels & the like,
i've resprayed full fairing sets with my little 28l jobby.
just get a decent gun or 2.
i've got a hvlp gravity fed gun, (cost about 40 quid from ebay) & its got a regulator with it.
done a couple of bikes with 2k & they have turned out ok.(definately better than any rattle job i've done)
also worth getting a small gun, airbrush type, for touching up etc.
one of my fave tools, the compressor! (that & the dremel). use it for painting the fence/shed (with the cheap gun i got with it), inflating tyres etc, dust gun is handy & so is the grease gun. also got an impact wrench for it as well.
cheers,

Indoors ... in my old bedroom believe it or not ... I've got a very understanding mother.
I tented the whole room out in plastic sheeting, leaving a vent to the outside world via the window ... temp was probably about 18-20c.
I put it down to no experience of 2k whatsoever, and a shitty painting system.
I bought an organic filter mask but wasn't 100% happy with it as I could smell the paint as I sprayed, which I didn't think you should ... I'll rig up a +ve feed system to a mask the next time I try it.
The site mentioned above, with a bit of searching should give all the info I need to try it again at some point, but think I'll practice on some old bits and pieces first.
I know that you need to wait between coats for them to flash off, which I believe refers to the solvent evaporating, but how long and how you tell it's ready for another coat is an unknown at the moment.
Would be nice to get a rough guide on BCF for anyone who was contemplating it |
Your spraygun is one of those poo electrical things, thats your first issue
Flash off for laquer is usually about 20-40 mins between coats, usually says on the spec sheet or back of the can.
Masks, if you can smell paint theres definantly an issue 2K mainly the primer and laquer contain hardner which is a isocyanate and will give you asthma and other breathing problems. as youve suggested the best way is to get a airfed mask although there looking around 100-150 for one, and your likely going to need another compressor and filter unles you got a huge tank. What mask exactly did you have as there are some 2k masks available from 3m for about 30-40 quid, Remember isocyanates are odourless and colourless so its best to be protected and they can absorb through the skin and eyes.
and those 2nd pics is that a pattern because the 2nd pic looks like fisheyes? im probably wrong on that. ____________________ Past: '05 Peugeot XPS '99 Aprillia RS125 '94 FZR600R

Was just a rubber face mask with organic filters screwed on ... that's probably why I've got em.. emfa ... emph ... breathing problems (emphysema)
That and all the years I've routed MDF, sprayed rattle cans in confined spaces etc!!
I knew that the 2k paints had the nasty stuff in them which is why I went to the expense of the filters, but wasn't 100% sure of them ... you've just made me even more certain they were crap
With regards the blue paint job, the entire bike was done like that ... good old fish net tights ... not for me of course
After full strip back to bare metal and plastic, all primed then painted black as the secondary colour (i.e. colour you want the lines to be) ... once dry stretch fishnets over everything (yourself included if that way inclined) and spray a few coats of the main colour, in my case a metallic blue BMW paint ... midnight blue or something like that.
Finally, remove fishnets and spray god knows how many coats of lacquer ... due to the different levels of the black and blue you get a rippled finish initially but the lacquer will start filling that in ... then rub back until smooth and polish.
All the best ... Barry
P.S. I went for the subdued look, i.e. you don't see it until you get close, but you can do it with contrasting colours for a more in your face finish. |

That's nonsense.
It depends entirely on how big the part you are sandblasting is.
Besides which, you can sandblast with ANYTHING it just will take longer with a small compressor.
I regularly sandblast bike parts using an unbranded 50L compressor which I guess is 1.5hp or 2hp. I have done fork-bottoms, shock bodies, tons of brackets bolts etc, calipers, loads of stuff.
Even did a rifle stock, which took the longest.
Sandblasting is a great process and can revitalise ancient and badly corroded parts or alternatively is the perfect prepping process for paintjobs on DIY brackets or any random part you are painting, and I would recommend doing it with any sized compressor, just if you find it testing your patience too much you know what you need to do (buy a bigger one!) ____________________ Yamaha SZR660 Caution to the wind, the throttle pinned! |
