To all mechanics who have taken the RC valve apart... Can you service/calibrate the RC valve without taking the head/engine off?

Its really cramped up in there.. and the manual is not too clear on how to get at this!! Please help! Smile

I can only tell u from experience of the thing.
there is very little to service but if u take off your tank, and on top of the cable servo there are two marks...high and low. Turn the ignition on and you will see a small indicator point to one of those marks ( low i think ), at the same time the servo should make a short whirring sound. turn the screw thread cable adjuster on the actual valve ( on the side of the cylinder barrel ) until the marker points exactly to low.
another thing to look out for is carbon deposits on the spindle flaps themselves, this might stop their free movement. you can check the movement by removing the exhaust then turning on the ignition at the same time as looking up into the exhaust port. they dont move very far and the process is made easier if you get someone else to help.
Beware NOT to start the engine without an exhaust!! ( bad idea )
Lastly lubricate any cables, check electrical conections then take it for a spanking.
I have tried different settings and the only ones that make any real difference were the most extreme settings, so best to just set it and leave it.
These parts are expensive ;
flaps about £18
spindle £15
I know this cos when my rings broke down a small part actually welded itself to the flaps and the barrel. Sad

Cheers for the info gasgas! The other day I was checking the RC valve.. when if found that once in about 6 times when I rev the engine (upto 4000 or so) and cut-off using the Engine kill switch.. a longer whirr ( twice as long as the the usual whir you get from the RC valve) was heard. I was wondering if I should have a look at it.. cause lots of things can go wrong with these. Confused

It seems like on certain occasions the Servo gets a bit confused!! and whirrs a while longer than usual.

hmmm.. any ideas?

Sorry mate, I am unsure without seeing the bike, have you tried checking the freeplay on the throttle cable. I know that the rc valve operation is relevant to the engine speed but am not sure how it detects "how much" adjustment is necessary, it may even be electronic. Have you tried asking Keith Walker, he is a bit of a wizz.

it wil happen depending on the possition of the servo,
when you kill the ignition the servo "resets" in to a possition which is slightly opan so that you can start the engine again, but when your reving the servo is already opan so when you kill it the servo will close as the revs go down to the idle point but as the revs go compleatly the servo then opans to the start possition.

Hi

If it is the same as the Cagiva servo it takes maybe a second to go from closed to open and back again. If you take the servo to pieces (and I really dont recommend you do, unless you want to train as a watch repairer) and operate ityou will see it is a small electric motor which is heavily geared down. If it is partly operated when you turn off then it gets a bit confused when you turn it back on again
