I got my 9er back at the weeked ather she spent Christmas and the new year in a Yamaha garage. I have ridden the bike for about 250 - 300 miles over this week and she has been perfect.

Before she felt like she was running on 1 cylinder then she wouldn't start, had a garage pick her up and get her running again.

They said it was a problem with the connections on the coils and they needed cleaning up they also cleaned up the idle plunger changed the plugs. The bike ran sweet as a nut all this week through really shit conditions. I tried to start her tonight and she was a little reluctant and then running her to work again she felt like she was running on 1 cyclinder some times especially in low revs when getting the bike moving from a stand still. Above 4/5k rpm she is fine at doing motorway speeds etc. I limped her to work and got into the car park and got off, it seems she is running on both cylinders (hot gas coming out of both exhausts and they where hot as each other 2-2 pipes) but it struggles up the revs and you can smell unburnt petrol heavily.

Any ideas what it could be?

When i started workin for yamaha we had a TDM in with the same problem it would be ok, then all of a sudden run on one cylinder. For this bike it was a coil pack that sorted it. Have you had a look at it yourself or would you not know where to start? (no offence intended)

I was thinking coils myself? Any Idea how much they where? I am handy with a spanner, the only reason I didn't do this work myself was because the bike was 120 miles from home I was ill and going on holiday 2 weeks after. In the end I got the bike picked up and 'Repared for about the same as getting it picked up and brough home.

I could strip it down and get to it but don't know what I should be looking for in the actually coil is it checking that it is not burnt/corroded?

Coil packs are not hard to spot as they have HT leads coming out of them. Chances are it may look perfectly fine as coil packs just go sometimes without warning.

Tested the coils it was fine, turns out it is the HT leads the insulation is breaking down I have burns on my frame where the pulse was escaping from it.
