I got the HP 2133 one for £190 to try out the netbook format.

If I was buying one for proper use I'd go for the Samsung based on what I've seen of it so far (reviews and demos).

I got her an acer one, 200 quid and its ace for what she need.
streaming video, webcam, expandable storage, browsing, word processing etc.

get the one with linux cos its cheaper, and if u want stick xp on it but use fat32 cos ntfs slows it way down.

Isn't the Linux on the Acer a cut down version?

cut down version of what matey?

Its a near on full distro with a few bells n whistles left off, with a locked down gui ontop.

I hated it, i like linux but this was annoying. Win xp went straight on or the missus would be doing my head in with silly q's

Tis what I meant Smile

I've kept Linux on my HP for now but its locked up a few times already so may be getting replaced with XP soon (which is also faster apparently)

Would I be able to whack on Ubuntu instead of the (I've heard) limited distro they come with?

Can you use an external DVD drive to play DVDs, and do DVDs work well enough? Smile

Is there anything they can't do?

I bought an NC10 about 3 weeks ago and paid an extra £16 for another 1Gig of RAM as I'm not a big fan of XP and put Vista on it instead. (I can almost hear people picking up torches and pitchforks)

Handles day to day computing fine and runs Office 2007 without a hitch.

The only minor niggle I had with it was that using IE7 (and 8) I would have occasional browser lockups. No idea why but I have since changed to Chrome as a browser and that works perfectly.

Never managed the 7 hour battery life because I always have the screen at full brigthness and wi-fi on, but even then I get about 5 hours use.

I only bought it to use if I'm travelling or when I'm lying on the couch and quickly want to check email. Personally if I was going to use it for anything serious I would probably go for a bigger, more powerful laptop because the Atom processor isn't really designed for intensive use.

Snip: Oh and this tells you how to get Ubuntu onto your NC10:

My housemate has the Samsung NC10. He purchased it ages ago when it was still lurking about for £299. I can vouch for it. They're very smart netbooks. The keyboard is a nice size for people to touchtype and do IM on. Screen is a nice size, and the camera and bluetooth are nice touches. The battery life is very impressive on the NC10's (5 hours MINIMUM on wifi at uni with a few youtube clips thrown in). Definitely one to have if you're out and about during the day. If you imagine an old 15" non-widescreen laptop being bisected, that's roughly the area of the NC10. It's only a few mm thick too. Ideal to have in your backpack.

I, on the other hand have an Acer Aspire One 150. Got it from PCworld for £199 on Linux. Roughly the same size as the NC10, but only has a 8.9" screen. Keyboard is the same size but the touchpad has the buttons on either side, rather than beneath it. Not a problem because i double tap the touchpad to click. I bought it because it was cheap and cheerful and i could bastardize it quickly.

I opted for the 120gb HDD version because the Solid state drive is nothing other than a very slow compact flash drive! Hence why if you want to install XP on it, it requires FAT32. HDD versions run better on NTFS. Suffice to say, there are guides on youtube that show you how to upgrade ram (which requires dismantling the chassis, but an easy job nonetheless). I'm running an Nlited version of XP on the netbook. So in effect, if you're technically competent, get the Linux version, pay £9 for the extra 1gb of ram from Crucial memory, fit it yourself, make a bootable USB drive and put your nlited version of Xp and install. Its perfect for taking to lectures and watching porn whilst in the bog. Got office 2007 and photoshop CS2 installed on the acer and it handles them with no problem. 1.5gb ram is more than enough to sail through most tasks.

The major gripe with the £200 acer is that the battery life is DIRE - 2.30hrs idle with Wlan enabled! I'm planning to get a 6 cell battery for it, but i'm waiting for prices to go down, because a 6600mah battery is £60! Still cheaper than the samsung NC10 though.

In conclusion, for the £199 + £9 i paid for the acer and the bastardized cracked XP, it made the acer a match for the NC10. My requirements are portable internet and good keyboard which is why i opted for the acer over the Asus Eee904 - batteries will become cheaper in due course.

Check for guides on google for how to install Nlited versions of XP onto a usb drive.

I used one of these for a few hours at the weekend and wanted to take it home.

The screen was clear the keyboard large enough to use properly and it was running photoshop cs2 without any problems. Lovely little machine, i'm thinking about replacing my laptop with one.

It is more expensive than a lot of the other netbooks out there but it has a quality feel to it, for £300 notes you can't go wrong in my opinion.

I've been wanting a netbook for while. For me they just outclass cumbersome laptops. I don't think a normal laptop is truly portable and if you are going to have something sitting on your desk it might as well be a big powerful desktop PC.
