Please Help-NEW PC KEEPS FREEZING

My computer specs are:
Motherboard: Gigabyte X48-DQ6
Graphics card: Radeon 4870 HD
RAM: Corsair Dominator 1066Mhz 2x2GB
CPU: Q9950 quad 2.83 Ghz
CPU fan: noctua NH-U12P
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate

NO OVERCLOCKING!

Please help my PC just freezes and I have to restart it with the power button not even ctrl Alt Delete works!!!

Freezes at what point? Give people some information with which to work. If even the most basic stuff has to be squeezed out of you nobody will fvcking bother.

What anti-virus software are you using?
Have you ran a FULL virus scan?
Are you using a firewall? Which one?
How do you connect to the net - wireless or wired router/modem?
Has this problem been there since day one?
If not, have you installed anything new just before it happened?
Has anyone else been on the PC - they might have installed something?

Does it properly freeze i.e. you can't move the mouse etc. or does it just hang. i.e. nothing happens, but you can still see the mouse moving.

If it is still new ish u should be covered by warranty take it back!

I'd probably try booting into safemode and seeing how long it lasts.

If it doesn't fall over your one step closer to figuring out where the problem lies.

If it does try booting up a ubuntu live cd, see if it falls over then. If it does it's likely a hardware thing.

You could run a clean install of windows on a partition, update every single driver and see if it lasts.

Try some of these and see what your results are.

Is it a home build, if so is the ram installed correctly, if so is the ram compatible with your motherboard? I had the same issue turned out to be the ram wasn't compatible and it would be fine until the PC tried access a certain area of ram usually when I was stressing it.

Get a tool called Ultimate boot CD and do a MEMtest of your RAM.

The computer is all brand new and there is no software on it except drivers which came with it and i'm only using the vista firewall.

The computer properly freezes so you can't do anything on it, no not even move the mouse cursor

My computer is a home build and i would send it back if i knew which part was broken but if I send all the parts back then i would have to repay for all the postage on the not broken parts.

when i boot the computer in safe mode it seems to be fine from what i'm aware off.

The PSU is a corsair TX750W, and i have checked the Vista internal temperature and it says 22 degrees (when it's not really doing anything) so I don't think it's the temperature.

Also i have tried installing the windows 7 beta still the same problem and for some reason XP won't let me install.

i'll do the memtest of my RAM now

Also i was thinkin it might be something to do with the CMOS, is it possible?

Also how can i check whether the RAM is compatible with the motherboard?

You would know if the RAM wasn't compatible with your motherboard because it wouldn't post pass the bios and would give a memory error. It's good to see that heat isn't the issue either, although I wouldn't trust the Vista reader too much so download a tool called SpeedFan and keep a close eye on it. It will show you all of your temperature from HDDs to GPU to Processor.

I'd say do a clean install of Vista and make sure you have all the correct drivers to hand, the fact that it's working fine in safe mode means that it's either a conflict of drivers, a program that is running on startup is making everything FSU or the RAM is FUBAR.

Just for query sake what RAM is it using? We had a batch of expensive Corsair XMS2 which had all failed in the same week, they all had the same factory date so it was obviously a bad batch. When I ran MEMtest it had flagged up 20,000 errors in a matter of minutes.

ok guys i have tried the Memtest and it keeps freezing about 4% into it. I have also checked the temperature of the computer and the resultsd are the the CPU is about 35 degrees and the motherboard doesn't have its red lights on, if the red lights were on then it would mean that it was overheating. I also tried the Memtest on safe mode and it still froze, sorry for saying it doesn't freeze in safe mode, it does. I do however believe it is the RAM so is there any other way i could test the RAM?

Did you check the fan on the Graphics card, if there is a fan that is. ?
That can cause it to freeze.

I don't even install the driver of the graphics card and it still freezes and by looking at the graphics card the fan is still spinning!

How many sticks of ram are in it. If more than one try it with just 1 stick at a time and see if it freezes then.

could be many things causing this, but a good place to start is to remove any unnecessary hardware and set the BIOS to its basic default settings. It will run slow, but you can perform testing and see what happens.

So load BIOS defaults (not optimised defaults) and just have it running with the graphics card and 1 stick of RAM. Do some testing and post back.

i haven't read all of th eother replies. but this sounds like a problem i had myself on this computer and my last one (same hard drives - everything else different)


i found that my secondary hard drive was causing the computer to reeze at random times or during hard tasks as you have said yours does - so if oyu have tried the other things ... RAM, connectors etc. try removing one hard drive if you have 2 or more or just replace it if you have one - worked for me and now mine runs freeze--free

MEMtest is supposed to be ran through a boot CD, not an OS like Windows. Try it through the ultimate boot cd and let us know the results!

My bet is overheating.

Could be anything, even powersupply, try testing all the parts individually, starting with just the MOBO and CPU + Fan.

You could also install CPU temperature monitors to keep an eye on the temp.
