What are the options for 250-500cc two-stroke projects?

of the bikes I can think of:

RD250
RD350
TZR250
TDR250
KR1S
RGV250
RS250
RD500
RG500
-all seem to fetch a lot of cash.

Remembering them from the late 80s as a schoolboy I'd really like a TDR250, or maybe a TZR, but they're getting scarce and I notice that Bike magazine has a feature on the TDR this month which will probably bump prices up further...

Are there any other similarly fun bikes with potential that are less 'in demand'?

RGV's are definately going up in price, I picked mine up a year ago for £700 and an identical model sold on ebay the other week for about £1600 Cool

TZRs are the cheap LC 250s.

I got mine for £175 Cool *smug*

EDIT: Don't bother looking at the 500s, they go for extremely silly money because of what they are and how very rare they are.

The KTM350 enduro I had would have made an interesting supermoto project; still a moderately peaky power delivery as no powervalve (later 2 strokes are often very flat). Claimed 51hp and not much weight.
Mine cost me £350 no MOT and I sold it for a bit less, but kept some of the spares (ie innertubes etc).

2T are getting so rare now people are buying 2 bikes to make a donor bike. Personally KR1S was the most fun but expensive bike i've owned.

https://www.kr-1s.co.uk/forum/

One of the best forums for close nit communites, i would go there.

plus all the bikes from the 70s
the Hercules, the awesome bridgestone gtr350,
all the kwaka triples,
the ts250

Thanks for the ideas.

I'm thinking mostly of something late 80s rather than a 70s
'classic'.

Really the only thing you can get cheap at the moment is a 350 powervalve. And even then you might end up buying one with no powervalves in it... Rolling Eyes

The rest are all being hoarded.

Hi

Also the Gilera NGR250 (and some other mid 1980s 2 stroke 200cc supermotos predating the TDR250 by 5 years or so). Kawasaki KR250 (tandem twin, parallel imports). NS400. RG400 (Japanese 400cc version of the RG500). Yamaha SDR200. Yamaha R1Z.

All the best

Keith

Abosolutely loved my TDR while i had it and seriously regret selling it, just make sure you get a good one if you go for one.

Check out www.tdr250.co.uk for some decent advice, all the guys are sound as a pound on there so feel free to ask away Thumbs Up

seems a shame that you are just looking at the late 80's
the 70's bikes had that real motorbike styling
and the power of them was quite respectable
the kwaka 350 triple in the early 70s was chucking out almost 50hp
the OSSA 500 was chucking out nearly 60hp
and the old rd400 was hitting about 45hp

The Suzuki RG250 Gamma, wasn't bad and i belive they are nothing like as sought after as a RD250LC either. You should get a shoddy Gamma for peanuts really.

how about one of the early KTM exc300's?
Honda CR500's can be picked up reasonably cheap. An i know they go into a CR250 frame so if it was SM'd it'd be a right beast.
awesome power.

**Shudders**

THE most unreliable piece of crap I've ever owned, when it did work it would go like buggery but I managed about a dozen rideouts on the damn thing, spent a fortune on it trying to get it to work and eventually sold it on as a non runner Sad
