Hey folks thought I would share a little find I have been using for virtual boxs.

https://www.virtualbox.org/

Has the same features as its paid cousin VMworkstation but its FREE!

It cannot do x64 yet but they are working on it.

I used it for 2 server installs and windows 7 yesterday worked great.

Cool - I've been using MS Virtual PC, but that doesn't have USB support, so I'll be giving this a try Thumbs Up

New? It's been around for ages, then got bought by Sun IIRC.

It's a good piece of VM software, works well under linux, though I have heard of quite a few people having problems with it.

The MS VM really slowed my PC down so I switched to VMWare.

Just what I read that it was new.

"new to me" that should be better Wink

The only thing I have noticed is the mouse can hang for a sec but that could be the touchad emulation on the laptop.

I would have used a cracked VMpackage but needed something quickly.

It really does not hog my resources like VM did in the past so for now I will keep it.

Enjoy.

If you're not aware, VMWare Server (I'd go for version 1.x) is free as is ESX Server3i which is the version that is a full OS install.

Ohhh I didnt know that but I needed one that can be used under a windows host rather than tie up a machine.

I am assuming that Vmware server is windows based right? Thumbs Up

Yep, VMWare Server runs on windows.
Not sure of the current state, but last time I actually downloaded it the v2 software forced you to use a dodgy web interface, while the v1 software still had a decent fat-client interface.

Most major limitation for me is that you only get one 'snapshot', while you got multiple with the ESX3i as well as the payed for desktop products.

G, VMware <v2, you can just copy the vmx files to use as your own snapshots if you want.

And I too thought the web interface was a bit shite.

Yea, that's what I've done in the past (we have the paid for version of workstation on my mac thingy at new work), but it's nice to have the ease of being able to jump backwards and forward at a click.

vmware all the way.

The fact you can make vm's that can go between server, workstation and macs is handy for some of us.

Snapshots are a handy tool when you want to test a new app, utill's or even patch's.

The VM converter is a handy element. Comes in two formats. One you can boot from (CD) and it lets you creat a vm of a physical machine to a network location or USB drive. The other being a remote tool that push's an agent to the physical server you want to Vm and remotely creats the VM (a little slower and i prefer to do it in one hit myself).

I have seen the VM software grow and grow and for me it just gets better and better. ]

I used the Virtual PC from Microsoft to start but moved on when VMware became more stable. I have also used parallels on the Mac's before and that was very buggy compared to the VM equivalent (fusion) now.

The ESX server is in a world of its own. Elements like resource pooling and VMotion are in a very good. Vmotion moves the VM build from one cluster head to another when the resources are busy or if the performance starts to suffer. Great with SAN and ISCSI technology..
