Has anyone here done the IAM test?

As above really, I'm considering joining my local IAM mob and wondered if anyone had any experience of it.

It's only £109 to join to seems like it may be a good way to help improve my road riding.

The £109 includes training and the actual IAM test.

My brother has done it and didnt think the training improved his riding any.

My trip to the ring was with a group of IAM advanced riders and out of 10 of us 2 of them managed to crash so it didnt do them much good.

I believe level headed riding is all you need Ham.

I very much doubt one of these courses could actually improve our road riding.

I think the courses are great, but maybe for people with virtually no road experience, or someone who doesnt generally ride much.

Not a deadset rule, just how I see it. Would be a trackdays worth of money wasted I think mate!

I went on my second IAM social ride last Sunday. All the riders were......"mature" . I had to ride all the way up to my comfort limit to keep up. 30's and 40's were almost obeyed but the rest of the ride was very quick. I have not met a die hard stick to the limits rider in the IAM yet but have heard about them

I like the social aspect too with regular organised meets and rides, pub evenings as well as the observed training rides. Go along and give it a try. The first visit is free with Thames Vale.

i recently passed mine, i would say that overall my riding has improved from it, its made it smoother and faster.

i also enjoyed doing the "training" as its an excuse to bugger off on the bike for saturday morning.

the test was fairly boring and pretty straight forward just stick to the "system" and keep your speed near or at the speed limits where safe, and dont break the law for 90mins and it job done

as for the other riders in the group some of them can really shift on the road,

It's something I may look into then even if it's just for the insurance reduction and to get out with some fast people.

I still think a thou is a waste on the road. I know it's not a good idea for me to get one. I'd just end up riding stupid again. Very very tempted.

I dont know if i would get along with your standard IAM type, but im seriously considering doing a BikeSafe at the Ace, anyone interested?

Yea but TBH Ham, are you going to save over £109 in insurance costs? I was under the impression for thins like this you get a nominal 30 quid discount or something...

At the end of the day for me i ride every day and obveously do some things that are technically illegal i dont see how much i would benefit from an IAM course because yes for 90 mins i could ride to the letter of the law but that has no baring or similarity to my normal riding so i stuggle to see where it would benefit me.

I figure a quick one day assessment by police riders, who have got to be a damn sight better than what i see as wannabe police riders in the IAM could maybe pick up on some of my bad habits, I know the route they take quite well, Ace cafe > A40 out towards Aylesbury so would probably benefit further from assessment on known roads.

Either way im up for it pretty much any time, I have road tax but my disc got nicked so i would probably have to sort out a replacement first. £30 including lunch seems ok i guess...

It gets you 10% off insurance. Don't know why I would rather fight to ban it. I ride far more than most IAM riders do so experience more road.
