I was in ASDA buying some Guinness ....

Now NEITHER of the following were on an sort of 'offer' .... and it was exactly teh same stuff, just different quantities/number of cans ...

10 cans 440ml ... £9.98 .. so £2.27/l
15 cans 400ml ... £15:15 .. so £2.52/l

As I said, the 10s were not on offer ... I mean WTF is going on with that pricing!?!?

What tool woudl buy the 15?!?!? ... someone not too good at basic maths I suppose ... even if both packs contained cans of the same volume each ... its obvious the 15 pack is more expensive per can ... but them being 10% less in each can just makes it madness!! Very Happy
...

...

....

needless to say I didn't buy the 15!! Very Happy

You'd be surprised, in Asia in Japan , Korea , Taiwan and Hong Kong but not Mainland china in shops you get two or three can sizes of the same product, they cost exactly the same 250ml 355ml 500ml, the small ones always get out of stock and purchased first....

Although admittedly ASDA does run such things all the time when say soup 4 cans = £1 , when the cans are individually 20p each. (been a while since I've had to have 20p ASDA soup though).

Hi

As above, Asda do it fairly often. The double packs of Jaffa cakes were more than 2 single pack quite recently.

If you want to save money, wander round and find all the out of date products (doesn't have to be anything you want), get to the till and ask to speak to the manager about it. Should be a nice discount.

All the best

Keith

If you want bang for buck, get a trade card and head on down to wholesale for volume discount.

I hoard items that are neccessity, because they are cheap in bulk, for example cases of toothpaste, cases of shampoo, cases of soap.

And not to forget, cases of delicious sexy sweet tantalising envigorating lovable delectable succulent nourishing refreshing soothing seductive satisfying irresistably unrelentingly moreish, BEER.

nope ... not offer/rollback (from what I could see - didn't really look, but they normally have a yella label and it didn't have that ... I'd have noticed that).

Please don't correct the price when you get to work ... or if you do, lower the price of the 15s, not increase the 10s!! Very Happy

Probably because customers have got so used to larger packs working out cheaper, it's a way for the shops to trick them and get more money.

I'm a right £/litre / pence per gram analyser though, so I don't get caught out either! Laughing

it depends what the buyers have been able to get from the suppliers. some times the suppliers have loads of stock of one size and need to shift it. can also be a loss leader, thats something that doesn't make a profit but gets you in the shop to spend on other stuff, also a competitor may stock the 10s cheaper and they have done a price match.

Loss leaders will be marked up as "BOGOF or 2 for 1 or 2 for £3 (or whatever) ... so the buyer knows they are getting a 'bargain' and snap them up ...

p.s. ASDA have done the 10 pack for ~£10 for ages Wink

Not always with loss leaders.

like I said the buyers may have got a good deal too.

Having spent over twenty years working in ASDA as loss prevention, price anomalies like this would stand out a mile and be checked up just to make sure a colleague hadn't done the price change for mates to get gear cheap, ( I know someone needs the authorisation level to be able to do it on the telxon gun and there would be a paper trail to find out who had done the change, but some colleagues still do it.)

Tell you what fucks me off, it's when they do an offer (2 for £7, 3 for £10 or whatever) then they don't put the £/litre price of the offer.

So you can't work out whether the 'offer' is cheaper than the non offer stuff.

They have trained us to see some garish yellow and red sticker and think 'wow a deal' and toss all objective comparison out the window. Tossers.

I didn't make a fuss, but a while ago I was looking for a loaf of bread near the end of the day (maybe a Sunday).
Asda person asked what I was looking for; I explained the only lot of bread left was out of date.
She picked up another one, then looked slightly worried when I pointed out all hundred or so loaves were all out of date!

Oh and you could work out how much it is per litre by, err, working out how much it costs per litre Smile.

On the subject, I noted the other day Asda actually had some decent deals going on, while all the ones in Sainsburys and Tescos recently have been pretty terrible; ie 20p off a £4 item, or whatever.

Why would they stand out a mile ... its not like they are selling them off for 99p? Is someone dedicated to checking the price per item in multi packs stays such that the larger the pack the same or less each item becomes? ... and as you said, if they are getting them off the supplier at different rates and still making the same/similar markup, why would it be detected/stick out a mile?

Or is that your job to ensure the price per (unit) is consistent?!!? ... if so ... as I said, now I have highlighted it, don't fecking go and change the 10pack to be more expensive now!! Razz ... bring the 15 down Thumbs Up ... or leave it there ... I don't care, I'll just buy the 10 pack!! Smile

Or I'll just go and buy it from Tescos for a tenner .... Middle Finger Very Happy

You could always try and do it in your head Wink ... if it is a tricky one (lets face it, the Guinness one was easy), pretty much all mobiles have a calculator function!! Thumbs Up

I have never taken it for granted the 'offers' are good deals ... sometimes they are indeed cheaper .. but it is summin silly like a 3 for £4 saves you 3p or summin ... and you just end up eating more of it ... so total false economy Wink

BOGOF is normally a no-brainer mind!! Wink

Any offers piss me off, buy one get one free type stuff the most. Just reduce the price of the item across the board and permanently.

For one example, Coca-cola and its derivatives seem to be very bad for this at the moment in petrol stations and the like. Brand name cider is another one that seems to fluctuate wildly for no apparent reason day to day.

Last week you could buy a 1.25 litre (stupid random size, branded as "share size" normally reserved for pizza delivery places) bottle for £1.44 buy one get one free. Go in there a few days later, and you are paying £1.15 for a standard 500ml bottle.

Next week there will be buy one get one free on the big 2 litre bottles, and so the cycle goes on.

Want to return consumer confidence, reduce the price to the "pour down the drain" commodity that is so obviously is, and keep it that way. Evil or Very Mad

Test the dishonesty yourself, it isn't just food retailers. Go to amazon and choose a basket of 20 varied goods (more obscure variants of stuff the better, DVD's, games, electronics) leave them there and don't purchase. Check in twice a day and watch the price of each item fluctuate wildly beyond comprehension, it's quite sickening when you think how you could get ripped off one second and have a bargain the next. It scarily goes in both directions almost daily.

Just had a look today, yea your right, although the boxes are different- the 10 box is plain but the 15 box has offers and stuff on it so might be guiness's thing effecting the price but not sure why its like that xD

Yeah, it must have something to do with the buy-in price as Skudd highlighted earlier, I suppose if they have an offer (buy 30 crates, get a free Guinness hat or summin) they have to make the cost of the hats up so don't 'discount' the beer so heavily when the supplier sells it ...

The price discrepancy can be found on www.asda.com so it wasn't simply a mistake at my store ...

I actually asked a BWS colleague and they said "thats just how it is" xD

lol but the 15 can box did have some sort of offer for a free glass with a send off thing on the box I think or something like that so that could be it?

sorry when i said it would stand out a mile I was meaning for those that had to check up on the price or those checking for wrong doing.

There are many pack sizes that from time to time it is cheaper to get lots of the small items than the tradition savings on the large items, sometimes this is in order for you to get hooked on the small item, the small item goes up then you buy the bulk. O even sometimes a new buyer doesn't know of all the pack sizes that the stores are matrixed for.

Anyway, the items are there for you to buy or not and it is upto you which you think is better value and get that if you can afford it.
