what a car! my dad has an audi s4, 4.2 v8 like 400bhp, so im used to being in powerful cars. The audi is mega fun, nothing can keep up with it when you boot it on a motorway, and you can really chuck it about for a big saloon. When you kick it, it pins you back in the seat. But what i notice in the audi is you can only use the power up to say 60 in town before you need to brake, and on motorways, it gains speed quickly when you boot it, it pulls you back in the seat, sure, but it doesnt really feel that fast, sure things get left behind in the mirror but it doesnt feel quick until you hit 150mph+ but you hardly ever get the chance to do that in a car. Lot more fun on a roads.

I got in the scooby and though 'meh' interiors basic, not as powerful as the audi, they have more hype than they deserve.... but the second we got to a twisty road, it all made sense. it feels plently quick enough off the line, not as fast as the audi but still stupidly quick, and it doesnt do motorway raceing, the gearbox is too close and it starts to run out of puff above 120+, but on a roads.... completley different animal, i would love to see a bike or car try and keep up with it, no way in hell i would be able to keep up with it on my bike.

got to say would much rather own an evo/ scooby over something like a fast audi/bmw/merc anyday after haveing being driven around in both, but then the more reserved driver would probably prefer a big german car.

A WRX with even a fairly unskilled driver who just keeps it pinned and hopes it keeps hold through every corner would outpace most bikes, loads more grip, stability, can brake far later and harder and able to hold much more speed through corners.

I've followed ppl I know on bikes in my old 325 turbo diesel before and been able to keep up (left for dead on the straights but made it back up in the corners to keep them in sight), and also in the Pontiac which doesn't even remotely handle but can keep up in the straights due to loads of power. A good rider on a half decent bike could outpace me in those cars with some effort, with something half decent like a Z4, Evo or WRX etc I think i'd keep up no problem unless you hit traffic.

As for explaining why it feels faster, the more basic a car is the faster it feels, torque makes a difference too if the acceleration is straight from the word go rather than having to wait for the revs to arrive. My V70 T5 was supposed to achieve 0-60 in 6.9 seconds, felt slow to me though you are driving a living room on wheels. The Trans-Am is 5.4 yet it feels massively faster because it's a cheap tacky rattlebox which makes loads of noise and makes you think it's actually putting some effort in.

I would give it a good go in my German uber barge. Laughing I dont like coming second.

I need to have a blast in my brothers evo just to see how good these road going rally cars really are.

I used to have a WRX and the handling is just unbelievable! I used to love it when it snowed, everyone else was sliding off the road and I was drifting round every corner!

It's an easy car to drive quickly too Thumbs Up

the thing is, the scoobys and evo's are both 4 wheel drive, surely the esscence of a sports car is big powerful engine up front and rear wheel drive,,

my rx7 tuned by wgt in middlewich, it was pumping out nearly 480bhp, used to destroy most things with the exceptions of supercars, especially in a straight line, was very twitchy in the wet, and if it was icy it stayed at home but it was good fun. not saying that scoobys and evo's aren't shithot cos they are but i tend to find that they make a bad driver look good due to all the electronic gizmo's and trickery, the rx7 only had very shit traction control, no anti yaw control etc, it really is a "drivers" car.

Have you tried an M3? Would say that having one... similar power to weight to an STI, I expect (depending on the model of both, I presume).
Doing my research before getting it did suggest the Rally-inspired cars would be slightly better on backroads, with the beemer a little better on the higher speed stuff; however there wasn't really that much in it and it was more likely to be down to driver skill/bravery.
The stock M3 was noticeably a lot more composed at a drift day than a lot of other cars.

Pah, still ghey.

The only car I have ever been in which could get close to a bike for fun was a Westie.

Vauxhall XE lump with a stage 1 head, fast road cams, twin sidedraft 40's. Straight through exhaust, no cat, no silencer (just a dummy box). Spat foot long flames on the overrun.

Stripped to the max, no windscreen, only instruments were a rev counter and bicyle speedo.

Hand cut dirvers seat from expanding foam, passenger seat was just a couple of bits of wood with foam on them.

Strapped in the 4 point harnesses, with the view of two knarly rusty headlamps up front, earplugs and sunnies needed to prevent aural and optical damage.

The whole shebang produced c.230hp at the crank, and weighed 500kg wet (hardly any fuel). No traction control, no abs, nowt. Just a mentalist called Mike at the helm.

Absolutely astonishing acceleration, and on the fairly narrow tyres cornering was a delight, the rear just breaking free when braking into corners, then squatting, squirming and sliding when the loud pedal was pushed on the way out.

That is a performance car, a driver's car. You can take your 4wd, TC, Yaw control, onboard computing and wether protection an shove it right up your arse.

Unlikely, it's not all about amazing handling, noise and speed. If you do plenty of miles I'd rather keep the 5 series over an Evo for comfort, and how often do most people get to drive to a point where the differences between the cars become noticeable, not many unless your daily commute is full of great roads and you don't mind significantly increasing your chances of having a big smash on a day to day basis (driving to a point where the differences become obvious is too fast to be safe on UK roads).

Maybe at the end of the year,i'll be hoping to up-grade to a sti as the prices are dropping like flies.
Was going to buy a evo 4, but after spending ages search for a decent one at a right price which didnt have engine problems i settled for this :

{plus it matched my bike Thumbs Up Wink }
98 impreza "terzo edition" 85 of 333

Done all the decals on it, pipercross filter, dump valve (vta.. Which is going today,im doing a dump valve delete mod),crystal side lights, crystal indicators front and side... and a tracker to keep mr insurance company.
Hopefully when my overtime picks up,i'll be sorting out a new ecu, ACVR boost controller and a front dectat.(the rear de-cat has been done.
The uk turbo is the cheaper option to get some insurance behind you so im told before jumping in and getting a sti.

I don't think he did, in so many words. Just mentioned that 'there is another way'.

The two things are worlds apart. It's like comparing a modern F1 car with one from the 50s... they're both capable of scaring the knackers off you but will do it in very different ways. Super-computer saloons can twist the laws of physics to a point where it hurts your brain, stripped-out roadsters can bend them to the point where they snap. Upon which, you might wish for the wodges of computer power that's doing it's damndest to keep you pointing the right way. Laughing

Computercars flatter and make it easier for Joe Averageability to go quickly. And it's easier to push your limits when you've got the backup of some electronics trying to save you from yourself (gawd knows I'm fond of my little orange TC light at this time of year!). But there's something beautiful about getting it right all by yourself in something feisty and simple, even if you'll spend half your time trying not to crash it negotiating a simple roundabout or sliproad. Laughing

I park my arse firmly on the fence, for the real world. Thumbs Up

Topgear says...
Caterham R500 1.17.9
Mitsubishi Evo FQ400 1.24.8

Top of the range in either case for these (though a turbo-bike engined kit car can get quite a lot closer to 1:1 power to weight ratio than the Caterham.) Presumably less extreme models of either will still show a similar difference.

I haven't actually been in a decent kit car, but would like too... still got a plan to get a Fisher fury at some point.
An Ultima GTR 720 (or the Z-Power 1000hp 4wd project of one) could be very interesting. 1.12.8 around the top gear test track for the 720 if I remember.

Anyway, after driving some of the above, I suspect an evo could seem very 'pedestrian' in comparison.

Depends where you're driving it. I reckon that unless you're actually *good* the Evo is always gonna be faster. Test track times set by professional racing drivers don't have any bearing on us idiots pratting around some twisty roads.

Meh, I just get really bored by folks playing top trumps with numbers. The mark of a good car (or a good bike for that matter) should be whether it makes you grin, not whether you can impress folk down the pub by quoting facts about something someone else managed to do in one once. Seconded.

My little 125bhp Suzuki Swift gives far more smiles per miles than my 170bhp Seat Leon; in fact, it's so much fun that i often find myself laughing out loud as i hoon down country lanes, bouncing the engine off the limiter.
Mr. Green
However, broadly speaking, the 7's generally seem to be driven by 'enthusiastic' drivers, whereas most of the big bhp jap missiles are built (mostly) for the purpose of willy waving:

He kind of did though, he said the closest he got to a bike was the westie and then followed it up with...

Taking away everything a car like an EVO is. The EVo is an awesome bit of kit (from both driving and being 'in') and I dont doubt the little 7 style cars are absolutely amazing but you would have to be an off your head purist to see what the electronic cars could do and say 'shove it up your arse'. They are amazing without a doubt, from day to day they are likely to be a complete pain in the arse as the interior is shite and the build quality is on a par with the first ever issue of 'windows' but they are still fantastic. Probably not as unpractical as when it rains and your out in the westie however Laughing Some people dont live on or near a track so something like the WRX or EVO is an excellent midway point surely?
