I'm 20 years old, my 21st is in March and I'm thinking out my options.

I would like to do my test ASAP, which would mean I would be doing the A2 test. Since I'm 21 in march does the 2 year restriction (33 BHP) still apply, or will the license be "upgraded" when I hit 21?

I would like to do my test on a 125 as that's what I feel comfortable on. I believe if I waited until I was 21 and went through the DAS, they would try to encourage me to ride the test on a larger bike. Can anyone confirm that?

Any advice appreciated.

No your license would not upgrade when you turn 21. You will have to wait the two years, or wait until you are 21 to take the test and then you won't have the restriction.

I can't remember the status of it but isn't all the testing changing in March? Or has it been pushed back again?

when you turn 21 you have the option to either do A2 or DAS.
if you did A2 today, your restriction would lift in 2years time. Likewise if you did A2 when you was 21.

The above posts are correct to an extent, but everyone is forgetting the existence of Accelerated Access. It is essentially useless, but I'll include it for completeness.

Accelerated access is where you do the A2 restricted test because you are under 21. However if you turn 21 before the two years is up you can sit a further test to upgrade your license. The accelerated access test is the same as the DAS test in that it must be taken on a bike producing more than 50bhp.

Thumbs Up

have you ridden a 500? TBH, I found that the 500 was much easier to ride than the 125, I think you'll be surprised if you've not ridden a bigger bike before just how much more stable it is, and how much more comfortable it is.

As Big Ham says, you'll need a bike with 50bhp or whatever it is nowadays to do the DAS anyway, so it's not a case of them necessarily pushing you that way, more that you HAVE to in order to comply so to speak

So if it were a matter of me wanting to progress the power ladder at my own pace, I would be better off taking the A2 test.

On the other hand, it would make more sense to take the DAS so I have more options. But I won't be able to do that until March.

What's the pricing for tests these days?

Yes. Then if you're confident enough to get a bigger bike before the two years is up you can take the Accelerated access test. Thumbs Up

If it was me I'd just do the DAS and get it over with though. Especially the way the way the licensing is set to change.

Interesting. I just spoke with my step-father and he said the same thing. It's something I hadn't considered until now.

It's really worth considering - all of my instructors told me it would be better on the 500's (as I lacked confidence on the 125's) but I didn't believe them til I got on one

Good luck with it either way Smile

practical test prices..
weekday £80.00 weekday evening and weekends £92.00

Just take your A2 now in my opinion. that 2year wait will give you something to save up and look forward to. if you did your DAS, you'd have to take lessons on the larger bike, and rent it for the test..
that could prove more costly then using your X months of experience riding your 125cc bike which you could just ride and take maybe 1-2lessons to polish yourself for the test which you could just ride there on your own bike.

What's the point of that?

He could either have a 2 month wait or 2 years of faffing about with restriction.

Do your A2 and every time you look at buying a bike you have to look at restriction methods, cost of restricting it, taking the time to get it restricted, doing a dyno run for proof etc. The restriction is just such an inconvenience.

Do your DAS, buy a bike, ride it.

Preparing to take two tests in the interest of economy seems illogical.

I'm leaning more toward the DAS option now. Taking the backlog of people wanting to take their test into account, I probably won't get a chance to take mine until March by the earliest, in which case I may as well take the DAS as I'll be 21 by then.

Thanks for the nudge chaps, I think I know what has to be done.

Smile

To do a DAS you must do it on a 500.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
