Quote:
Organisers at Croft circuit, near Darlington, fear that if a recent court decision is not overturned, the famous circuit could soon face closure.

A family living next to the track reportedly won a case forcing Croft's owners to pay £150,000 compensation, as well as an estimated £700,000 in legal costs. The damages were apparently for loss of quality of life that the family's barristers claimed had been caused by the noise of cars on the circuit.

Interestingly, the complaint was not about organised race events, which only take place on approximately 50 days each year, but instead regarded vehicle testing days and open track days.

Organisers at Croft fear that if this decision is upheld, many similar cases will follow, and the financial blow could prove fatal. An appeal against the decision was heard last week at the Court of Appeal in London, but as yet no decision has been reached.

Meanwhile, the family concerned also attempted to gain an injunction restricting activity at Croft to just 40 days-per-year. The judge is said to have refused this request, but the claimants are cross-appealing this decision.

Croft circuit grew out of a disused RAF base first raced on in the 1920s, before being used by the airforce again in World War 2. Since then it has grown into an world-famous racing circuit, hosting various club events, as well as British Touring Car Championship and British Superbike Championship rounds.

The circuit generates an estimated £3m a year for the local economy, with its visitors bringing activity to local businesses.

Dennis Carter, director of organising body Croft-Promo-Sport, told The Northern Echo: 'Our future really depends on what the court decides. I do not want to sound too alarmist because I would like to think we can still find a way through this. The people at Croft do a fantastic job for us and I would really like it to continue.'

Hmm looked an interesting track to attempt a track day on.... oh well...

Let me guess, the family moved in considerably more recently than the 1920s. Rolling Eyes

What a great track - these fuckers should move away. Their selfish attitude will effect thousands who love to participate in or watch motorsports. Why can't we have some common sense here.

On an aside - when I was at Mallory park the organiser said about noise levels having to be reduced as a local MP moved in nearby and began kicking a stink up about the noise. These people should be put down.

The transcript from the case:

Looks to me like jilted ex-missus combined with nimbys who lost the fight against the planners and just can't let it go! I'm amazed that considering the circuit has planning permission and has followed all the rules imposed upon it that the judge has ruled against it!

it`s a bloody disgrace that they should even be able to take it to court never mind get a payout. Croft are very strict about noise they will not allow any machine before 12.00 just so local residents will not be disturbed and there are very few houses near enough to the circuit to be anything like affected by race noise. Surely the miserable moaning sods can go out for a few hours on the few race weekends croft has.
Maybe we should organise ride outs passed there house every weekend and make some real noise on there door steps after all they carn`t stop you going up and down a public highway. sure that will piss them off even more Middle Finger to them i say

These sort of people really get on my nerves.

They must have known about a race track before they moved there in the first place!!!!

Also, if they track closed down, i'm sure the £3m revenue for the local economy would be missed, resulting in many local businesses closing and residents moving as the area becomes run down and possibly chav-infested.

All for the selfishness of some resident who knew there was a world famous track nearby. In a way it will be justice served if their local infrastructure slowly died off and the area changes.

At Castle Combe the locals get free yearly passes to go to ANY event on any weekend at the circuit...I personally would love that sort of bonus to living in a certain area!

We live about 2 miles from The Rose Bowl, and we could hear the Neil Diamond concert as clear as if it were being played in the back garden...don't particularly like the fella or his music, but we certainly didn't go off and complain to anyone.

What a massive pile of Garbage, so if I want some cash, I go move next to a race circuit that's been there for 100 years or so, then claim several thousand £K.

Yes that make perfect sense.

The judge is wrong and obviously bias against people having fun (which is what this normally boils down too)

I wouldn't be surprised if the family have some influence based on the fact they can spend £700K on court fee's instead of moving to another fucking house that wasn't next to a motherfucking race track.

Apparently the lady raising the charges used to go out with / was married to the track owner, but they recently broke up.

EDIT: A lawyer has read into the court case. It's an interesting read in the topic
