Hi, I've been riding for 5yrs and in that time i've never scraped the pegs. I'll find some nice bends or roundabout and have a go, but i'm nowhere near the lean angle needed. e.g on a medium sized roundabout 2nd or 3rd gear, 1/2 my arse off the seat, shoulder dropped, head low and looking around as much as possible..feels great, but as i try to drop it lower i feel the front get abit twitchy, and we're talking about a slight feeling of the front tyre moving. Anyways i stop pushing my luck at that point. I'm not really asking for tips tho good 1s gratefully received ! No..all i wanted to do was show you the lean angle i'm gonna have to achieve!
I'm not in a rush to chrisen my hero blobs, but it looks like it's gonna take a while. Confidence and a deserted road/roundabout is all i need oh and maybe someone elses bike to practise on !

Pat

It doesn't lean as far as when you lean it over when its not moving, as the suspension is more compressed when you are doing it for real.....

Many people's methods for faster cornering are to hang off the bike as this means the bike does not lean as far and that the suspension isn't as compressed...

Which means the solution to getting lower and grinding foot pegs and such like is NOT to lean off... and to just sit inline with the bike, perhaps lean the OPPOSITE way....

Before I sold it I had a round about bash and got the zorst pipe down.

Now if you can grind you engine casings AND be leaning off as far as possible at very high speed then go apply to race for Moto GP.

Oh take at YOUR OWN RISK ALSO

I agree with the stop trying bit. The feedback you're getting from your front tyre is telling you its about to wash out if you push much harder, by the sounds of it.

Remember, going around corners fast does not always equate to leaning the bike more. I've scraped the pegs a few times, but each of those times I was sliding down the road behind the bike Laughing

Corner it like it's a motocrosser and you will get the pegs down. Just hope they don't dig in though as if your not ready it may spit you off.

I got mine by accident, was on a good road I knew, hot summer (at the moment not a good time to go around trying to get pegs down), me and my Dad both caught up in a bit of race down this road. I had started to notice how far I was leaning it as I glance down and saw how close the road was to me (more than normal). Come round a tight left hander, accelerate out, and flick it right over for a right hander, leant over and the peg touches down, I shit myself and as I leave the corner realise what happened. Got home for my dad to tell me ("There is no way that thing is 33bhp Laughing ).

Was here so you get an idea of the road, I guess the map doesn't make the corner even look that sharp (I was traveling A to B).

But seriously, why do you want to do it at this time of year? If you can do it (I can't, only do it once) fair enough doing it at this time of year. But the roads at the moment aren't just the best condition to be trying learning to do this.

Just to clarify, i don't goon about when the roads are crappy, or when its too cold for the tyres to help me.

I hate scraping my peg's they dig in and almost have you off, i managed to wear one of them by roundabout surfing. Other one still digs in though.

Pegs are for putting your feet on, not dragging along the tarmac.

As mentioned; there's lots of factors. I found it was impossible to ride a VTX1300 without doing it on pretty much every corner.
Conversely, if you do it on a bike with reasonably sporty pegs at speed on the road, something bad is likely to happen to you soon.

I'd particularly advise against scraping pegs under general riding: stuff like drain covers, or even just chips in the tarmac could cause something very bad to happen.

The usual first answer if you're scraping your pegs is that something wrong is happening and you should at least be hanging off more Smile.

I'm not sure that hanging off compresses the suspension less; but going around a corner definitely does by quite a lot. It's taking a decent chunk of stopping 200kgs+ of man and machine from going straight on at whatever mph.

As above, hanging off the other side will /probably/ be slightly safer as you can do it at a slower speed for a given radius of circle... I'd definitely be starting out playing on a roundabout.

I should point out I crashed my NSR once while getting the pegs down.

Very true but apparently not as fun as scraping them Wink

£10 says your front tyre gives up before the pegs even get close enough to scrape lol.

if you really want to scrape pegs get yourself an old 70's road bike, you'll most likely be able to get the pegs, centrestand, sidestand and exhaust onto the floor without necessarily falling off...

watched a mate dig his crashbars into the tarmac exiting an island when i was chasing him, he was on an old Z900, i was on an old CB750sohc K series, we regularly had to contend with touch down when playing

I could scrape the CG pegs fairly easily at lowish speed.
It was a 'concerning' feeling, because they were rubber coated.
First time I did it, I was leaning over a little more and the bike just bounced back up again. Leant over more, bounced back again.
Took me a little time to realise it was bouncing up because I was scraping the pegs - initially thought something really odd was going on with handling.

Anyway, point being that with dodgy suspension and low pegs it can be quite easy to scrape at low speed even despite oldish tyres. Not suggesting it's recommended still, though Smile.

Yeah i felt like i was almost there on my '93 CG.....looking down i could see i was so close. Wish i still had it, esp for winter hacking.
When i had the XL125 it taught me so many things whilst greenlaning n gooning about in a disused quarry. Wish i still had it cos i learn't alot.

I got a peg down on my CBR125 when I got a right hander wrong, ended up on the left side of the lane next to the hedge with a left hander fast approaching.

Despite me being a noob I managed to just yank it over and kept the wheels on my side of the white lines, peg scraped and scared the living daylight out of me.

I'd hazard a guess that the CBR125 handles a bit better than a 1980 CB250 though.

I scrape the pegs on the Diversion quite a lot on rides. But then I don't hang off, I keep inline.

On a trackday last year, I went through my toe slider and into my boot and that was with balls of feet on pegs. My pegs are pretty mangled.

You should be touching down with your knee before your pegs. If your peg touches the road first you're not hanging off enough which means you're sacrificing speed, safety and tyre grip.

I can get the pegs down on my CD250 (mostly accidentally), but I'm pretty sure they must be lower than your CB250RS as I don't think I'm leaning that much. That's with a bald, square Avon Roadmaster rear and Cheng Shin front tyre.

I did manage to get the right-hand peg down on the RXS100, not recommended though as they don't fold up which made it feel like I was about to be thrown off.

I got my peg down on my GPR, and the monkey bike ( Laughing ) also been on the back of Jamie's bike peg down, I don't really like it as the peg catches. If you are looking to do it for fun and a challenge then I would suggest going for knee down instead. It's much more fun and you won't be near the limits of the tyre as much as peg down, therefore there is less chance of getting the whole bike down (theoretically). I can image that it wouldn't be too hard on your bike, just a chance of the tyres giving up if they arn't at the right pressure and hot enough before attempting it.

I scraped the gear selector on a Yamaha Townmate step-though once. I was negotiating a tight left hand second gear bend with a steep uphill gradient. As the bike bottomed out the shifter hit the deck and knocked it up into first gear - much hilarity ensued as I suddenly dropped 10mph while banked over Laughing Ah, swing arm front suspension, how I don't miss you...

I remember my CBR6 would peg out quite quickly, must have been the height of the pegs as It didnt happen on purpose often. Then when I rode the hornet I found I would do it coming off roundabouts, very annoying. I had to buy a new blob to go under it before I got rid of it.

As someone said, why bother? It may happen it may not (you might find you get the peg, your swingarm, your elbow and helmet down instead).

Just ride and enjoy it!

It still amazes me how far a bike can be leant over and still corner. Seeing pics of James Whitham made me do this Smile
