In a small way.

*In light of the spam ratings people sometimes get for trying to help each other out I would like to point out that I am in no way affiliated with the makers of this product, just a consumer giving a reccomendation*

I have always prefered Winamp over Windows Media Player or iTunes, for reasons most people who have used them at all will understand.

Then I downloaded Winamp on the reccomendation of a mate and I can't say a bad word about it.

100% free (there is a paying version but it barely gives you anything extra), easy to use etc.

Also a massive help is that it works with any iPod in a much easier way than iTunes, which has helped alot with my new one. It has really proved itself to be well designed.

You can download skins for it too which are quite cool, my one:
https://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a292/66879/winamp.jpg

It also goes into a tiny miniplayer with the basic controls available.

And there are awesome visualisations for download. One of the best and most widely reccomended is Milkdrop, which you can get free on the site just like the skins.

Right that's enough from me.

NB: I have however heard bad things about running Winamp in Vista, although can't confirm anything because I use XP in which it works Hunky Dory, but don't say I didn't warn you.

I think most civilized individuals have known about Winamp since about 1998. Get with the programme.

I have it on my home PC, but it keeps telling me about updates which is annoying. Its not all that much better than windows media player to be honest. Back in the day when it was the only choice it was great, but now its only slightly better than the free thing you get with windows.

Fail.

Maybe I'll be able to load my Nano without feeling like I'm trying to manage a space-shuttle re-entry. The iTunes software is utter shite.

Agreed, iTunes is cack.

And I find Windows Media slow and unreliable.

And sorry Marjay, I was 6 in 1998 so wouldn't have been aware of it unlike you old fuckers Razz

As Marjay says Winamp's been around for the best part of ten years.

The earlier versions were good. The later version seem to have just got more fancy and resource hungry. I haven't even bothered downloading it to my new computer. Media player is pretty similar now unfortunately.

I still have Winamp V2.6 running happily on the laptop, haven't found a need to update it. Tend to use VLC player more often than not now; has skins to keep the kids happy, too.

As far as iTunes is concerned, it can suck my salty plums. Sharepod does everything I need without anywhere near the intrusiveness, resource requirements or bloat.

So you were one of the late adopters, then? Razz

Bet you were one of those that didn't even get an internet connection 'till the second half of the 90s too!

I had WinAmp back in the day on my old Windows 98 PC. Was a really good program, a lot better than the bundled Windows media player. I solely used it for all of my music needs.

When I upgraded to XP I just used the bundle WMP and have since. It does everything I need with very little fuss. Not bothered upgrading to 11 yet. WMP10 plays mp3s fine, and I use VLC for any video that wont play on WMP.

Probably.

Especially when there's stuff like Amarok about...

https://amarok.kde.org/files/amarok14/shot1.png

It might even have a skinning facility, but I rarely feel the need to crayon over stuff these days. Thumbs Up

For those linux types: Audacious is similar in alot of ways. I hear you can even get the winamp skin running on it too.

Well I like itunes, but only cos I have been sunk in its electronic radio channels for months, indulging my perverted passion for trance music. Mr. Green

Although it could be accepted by my strangely Neanderthal thought processes that other players MIGHT have those sort of channels as well Laughing

Not thought to access winamp for over 5 years actually - but I might have to have a look at it again, or at what else is recommended on here.

itunes for girls.

winamp for boys.

thems the rules.

I have found Winamp 5.092 the best version, the latter versions tend not to be as good since AOL bought winamp, think it was aol anyway.

I've run winamp for years - it's great. Only complaint is it's quite processor heavy especially when running visuals but then I don't tend to listen to music whilst having the visuals on whilst trying to work on my PC so it doesn't really make a lot of odds in the grand scheme of things

Nope, I am too. It supports UPNP sharing of the music library to our WiFi music streamer hooked up to the hi-fi. Mr. Green And Totem (Gstreamer backend) Thumbs Up I love Amarok too, it's absolutely awesome.

I was using that for a time but it is quite bloated and no EQ, that was disappointing

I've been using Winamp since...err...a long time Laughing I got version 1.something on a freebie disk on the front of a magazine, must have been 97, 98, something like that.

Still use it today, up to version 5.something now. Still using the classic skin. Only extra feature I use are the 'Global Hot Keys', although the media library is quite handy for keeping track of what you've been listening to.

The little experience of iTunes I've had suggested it was clunky and not particularly intuitive. I don't own any iEquipment so I've no need to use it.
