I've googled but getting mixed answers Evil or Very Mad

I have a 40" Toshiba rear projection TV.

I have sold said TV and need to transport it to buyer.

Can I safely lay it down for the transportation period or will this fuck it? I know you can't lay plasma screens down, but I don't know about rear projection TV's!

Ta.

Weight of teh screen can bow and cause damage to the screen/tv. Should always be kept upright.

Not sure but i've done it. Had a 40" projection TV in the back of the van once and accelerated slightly too quickly uphill and it ended up on it's front. Still it was going into Mastercare for repair at the time so if it did break it they could just fix it with the other problem Smile

That is advice from a guy who spells weight as wait.

I know this thread isnt about plasmas, but I've got an old plasma tv, that I have dropped once or twice without it breaking. I mean it falling over forwards from about 20 degrees to the horizontal without breaking.

They are pretty tough. I'm sure transporting them upright is better, but I wouldnt worry too much if i transported one flat on something soft like a mattress.

I've got no idea about rear projection tv's.

Just wedge it upright somehow if you're worried.

In all fairness at the above mentioned job (collecting and delivering repaired TV's and Hifi equipment) we always had to transport and carry plasmas upright, never explained why just said they had to be kept upright. Didn't really argue it at the time as they were new so still costing a couple of grand minimum.

I have been told that the reason that plasma TV's need to be kept upright is that if you lay them flat, the plasma gas shifts and settles out of place, knackering the display.

I have heard you can get away with it for a short period of time (10-15 mins) but it is best not to do it at all if possible.

Easier said than done with a pick up truck Wink

Anyways, worry over now! It sold to someone who's going to collect it themselves.. so I'll show them it working when they collect and then the transportation is up to them, if they fuck it it's their own fault.

If you can hold the CBR upright in the back, hold the plasma up in a similar fashion. Wink Laughing

Glad you got it sold though. Thumbs Up

As an aside to this thread, why do these TV's have projections from the back of them!? Confused

Surely it'd be better to project from the front of them, like normal projectors, or is it so you can watch the picture on the TV at the same time as the picture projecting from the back of it?

I`m not liable, if anything goes wrong. (just to give you confidence in my advice Very Happy )

You can lay plasmas flat, but ensure you have nothing on top and preferable screen up, for a short while. When it gets to its destination you should set it up and let it settle for an hour or two before powering up so i`ve read over on avforums.

With a rear projection tv. I`m unsure, i`ve heard various things where people have knocked one of the colours out of synch leading to ghosting but as im aware they can be recalibrated.

If youve got a pick-up i`d chuck some old cushions beneath it cover with an old duvet and strap it upright to the rear of the cab.Maybe chuck a tarp over if the weathers looking glum.

Hope all goes well.

Ben

Edit: just reread and noticed the`re picking it up, best option IMHO.

It's just like a normal self-contained TV mate. Just they project an image from the rear to the screen thats the way they work, I don't know the ins and outs. Easier explained with a picture... just looks like a normal TV. I don't really know the benefits of a rear projection, they are old hat now and I love my new samsung full HD LCD! lol

We lay plasma's face down on blocks of polystyrene to work on em.
They can be face down all day, and possibly right over a weekend if its a friday job. Awkward to work on if they're stood upright.

I worked on projector tv's for a while. We used to put 2 on a pallet facing each other for transport. Horible things to work on. Dont see many of em these days.
