I have a chance of a low mileage 750cc bike, i was saying
to myself......is it to big.....
Whats the opinions on a new rider jumping on a 750, i'm over
40 and wont be a speed freak, the hand and brain control the
speed and my older brain Wink wont push the hand to far.

Anyone else start on 1.

Which bike is it?

As long as you appreciate it is going to be relatively fast and you will practice with it before you go gunning it about, you should be fine.

go for it man. be careful to start and you'll soon get used to it.

people who say "anything bigger than a 600 as a first bike is stupid" give me the red ass.

as long as you're careful you'll be fine.

Mooserx mostly people who say that are talking about 33bhp restictions, in which case most of the time it is just pointless weight.

Mapex I say go for it, as long as you can control it, bieng 40+ does not make you immune to stupidity or crashes Wink

the gsxf is a good starter bike and the 750 is the one id go for. You could do alot worse. Just take it steady, its not a sports 750 but it will be like a rocket to a new rider. Thumbs Up

If you have literally ridden nothing else then the acceleration is alot lot different to a car, so much quicker, plus most cars won't flip over if you get over the top.

Most modern 600's are quicker than a GSXF cc aint everything. I think one of those will be a better starting bike than a sports 6.

As in if you overdo it with the revs/clutch in a car you're not going to flip it over, whereas you can on a bike? Confused

I wasn't aware bikes did...I just thought they got faster.

I meant when pulling away really, I'm not suggesting you could dlip one from acceleration or changing gear, but you can flip them, ask mattspratt, or "Tom" with the long sleeves for protection in that youtube video.

Your in for a shock, on both my Speed Four and TDM I can't use full throttle in first otherwise the front will pop up.

I think there's some truth in it when people say you learn to be a faster rider by starting off on smaller bikes and getting the most out of them before moving up. But not everybody wants to be the next Rossi.

Can't see anyone fliping a gsxf without deliberately provoking it. The front will probably go light and skim the road a bit but they are pretty heavy.

My first bike was a Gsxf 750, I just took it easy and learned where the power came in etc.

It was a good bike that I enjoyed and got some good learning from!

Go for it!

People who recomend large sportsbikes to inexperienced riders because they don't have to deal with the consequences if it goes wrong give me "the red ass"

Back to the point. Large capacity, and by that I mean 80bhp upwards, sportsbikes are comparitively twitchy.

They are designed to be thrown from side to side very quickly so they have a high, unstable centre of gravity, the brakes are designed to haul the bike down from 160mph as quickly as possible so they are very sensitive and there is more power for each degree of throttle roll on then say a bike putting out a third the power.

People think of 600s as learner de riger or even as slow bikes but the truth is that off the lights they will see off a Porsche 911 Carrera, Jaguar XKR or any number of other sportscars.

You can learn to ride on a large sportsbike, but and its a big but, you are makign things more difficult for yourself and putting yourself at greater risk.

The stats for serious incidents say that a young man on a large sportsbike is most like to have a serious/life threatening/terminal incident.

Second most likely is an inexperienced middleaged man on a large capacity sportsbike.

Or to put it another way. A CB500 will do the quarter mile in under 14 seconds, crossing the line around about 100mph and it is only 58bhp

A 94 GSXF will hit 139mph doing a quarter mile in 11.15 crossing the line within 11.9seconds

The performance is irrelavent though! It's all about control, attitude, training and being competant and confident. A rider that does know over estimate his or her's abilities, and yet has confidence to explore there limits to get to a point where they know exactly what they and their bike can and can't do safely.

I'd be happy to pass my DAS again now and buy a ZX10R, if that was what i wanted? But i am cautious and have loads of respect for the machine and would always underrate my own abilities if pushed.

I know plenty of people who have quite suddenly changed from a small hatchback to a powerful rwd car, (Nissan 200SX S14 was one example) Then they have decided to explore their new car's performance just a bit, and the next thing they know they have spun off the road into road furniture or even another vehicle. The point being is that it's just the same for car's, and you need to have respect for the vehicle and get used to things gradually, as well as your own developing skills in vehicle control.

I wouldn't say it's irrelevent.

When you have more performance on tap you are far more likely to get yourself into situations that you don't have the skill to get out of.

Yes I know you will try and be responsible, but I think most people have been caught out in their first year of riding. Myself inclusive. I got away with mine because I was on a 33bhp 400. If I had been on a full power sport 600 I would have been in a whole lot more trouble.
