PostPosted: 14:25 - 18 Jan 2009    Post subject: Tax disc nicked. Reply with quote

5 days ago I went somewhere parked up went shopping....

Came out noticed it on its side bugger, no visible damage to the CBR R&G bung actually did its job, looks undamaged why oh why do people do this......

Then last night while taking the Africa twin tax disc holder off I thought hold on my CBR600 holder + tax disc is missing... foolishly I'd forgotten to put the poor colour photocopy tax disc on the CBR.

What do I do now? ...

I've checked the online thing and its not been cashed in and it is still valid... presumably ANPR will state my bike is taxed and such like...

So erm what do I do about it? , my initial thought is to stick my Africa twin tax disc on it on a more secure mount , dirtying the glass a bit , so that the reg is obscured... and riding until the tax on the CBR600 expires and then buying a new one when it is due...

BUT the africa twin is a bigger cc bike and thus costs more and the number plates are completely different my NTV had a number plate which differed by two digits only.

So that when traffic cop pulls me ANPR looks clean quick glance for tax disc its present (or seemingly present) ..... and can't do me for that.

I hear replacements are expensive compared to the £48 the tax costs for the CBR......

I presume I can't cash in the tax disc since I no longer have it......

As my thought was cancel it and buy another 12 months instead...

Any thoughts?..

Thanks..

I'v had mine fall off on me got a replacement for £7, but that's on a 125. Now I'v got a proper tax disc holder and screw it on as tight as I can.

If the police pull you, tell them what happened but say it happened yesterday.

If the DVLA want us to display are tax disc's they should provide us with holders.

Personally I would report it.

If you put a disc from another bike in, you are commiting a fraud.

Get a new one and colour copy it. I've got a colour copy in mine, but I've not attached the holder and it's under the seat, but I rarely park up in public places other than supermarkets.

If you still have the receipt from the post office can't you get another one?

I've never bothered with a tax disc on the BROS, I don't see why I should have to pay for a holder Razz 18 months and counting.

Putting on a disc from another bike is going to cause you more problems than not having one at all, surely its going to bring up suspicions about whether the reg is right or that its been nicked.

Get it reported to the police and you will have to pay the fee to get a replacement.

As to it being used, most bike tax disks are unreadable for things like reg etc and it will most likely be in a car, just so traffic warden does not slap a ticket on for no tax disk as well.... Twisted Evil

As the have the anpr now, it should simply be a matter of paying up and not having to display.

DVLA form V20 - Duplicate vehicle licence disc application form.

Costs £7 for a duplicate. Up to you whether it worth it or not.

In the 6 years of riding bikes, I've never had a tax disc on a bike, merely kept it in my wallet for this reason. Never had a problem even when I forgot my wallet and pulled over, police can just check on their talking brooch it's taxed!

I don't display a tax disc since mine was pinched about 8 years ago. I t is under my bike seat though and although I have been pulled up a few times they have never asked to see it even though they mentioned I am not displaying it.

When the first one was nicked I just carried on as usual until renewal date without getting a replacement.

Early last year I was fined £60 for failure to display the tax disc, even though it was taxed.

I explained politely that I hadn't put the new disc on because the last one got nicked (funnily enough in Manchester) and that the disc was at home. Made no odds, still got the fine.

I now carry the tax disc in the pocket of my leathers.

Same freaking thing has happened to me yesterday. Someone knocked my bike down, then decided to steal my tax disk it seems. Right outside where I live.

Bastards!

so they could still fine you. Smile

Guess you would need to fail the attitude test seriously though for them to be that picky. Smile

You could just leave it, if you are pulled tell them you have just noticed it has been stolen but not sure when it was stolen. Can then use the copper who stopped you to report it stolen.

Not had a tax disk on the 636 since I've owned it.
For this reason alone. Normally sits in my wallet.

i would follow Louises idea , keep the disc in your wallet in the future cos unfortuately they are way to easy to steal from a motorbike.

Even better the Government could make motorbikes TAX exempt that wouls solve the problem.

My tax disc and holder are in the garage and have been since I've ridden bikes! Laughing

Only one officer asked me about not displaying tax and I mentioned taht it gets tolen often so I jut leave it a home as£7 to get a new one is a bit unfair (on me).

He said ok not towrry, as long as it's taxed is fine.

Obviously you will get some shitty arse coppers, but most of them (from experience)are nice Thumbs Up

Put the colour photocopy (which you presumably still have since you forgot to put it on) on the bike. ANPR will not flag you up and a quick visual inspection will pass muster. I ride with a copy always and have no problems.

I have a few current tax discs, the originals are still in their envelopes; the photocopies are in there holders... On my desk, where they've been for months!

Grampian Police and Northern Constabulary don't field many traffic cars so they have a large area to roam. Never been pulled by a traffic car up here; only ever regular plod.
