Hi all,

i had a quick search but couldnt find anything relevant to my question.


What oil should I be using to coat my air filter when replacing? cheers all.


My bike at the moment Thumbs Down Im giving her a major service while shes off the road with an electrical fault.

I use Putoline Air Filter Oil on my XR

I know its a MX oil but I can't imagine it's that different from a road bike's filter oil.

When I oil mine I put the filter into a zip lock plastic band and tip a good amount of oil onto the filter. I massage the oil through the filter until every bit of foam is covered. Then be sure to wring out any excess oil.

I too have just used normal (new/clean) engine oil on my air filter. I think that to buy the special stuff is a complete waste of money, after all it is pretty much the same as any other type of oil.

air filter oil is very sticky this is to stop dust from entering your engine i would always recommend you use proper filter oil i have tryed the spray oil and would not recommend it as it doesnt go right into the foam as above use a plastic bag and massage the oil into the foam after riding for a few weeks you will see how well it works

On the basis that special filter oil may be a waste of money what is the cheap way of cleaning foam filters (instead of the proper expensive stuff)?

The use of things like petrol and paraffin will seriously shorten the life of your filter ... have a look at a filter thats been cleaned with these and compare it to a looked after filter ... the gaps and holes in the foam are massive and it looks all 'loose'.

Not what you want when the professional mechanics say that its the most important thing to keep working properly and maintain.

If you are looking for and easy way to look after your filter then I would suggest using No-Toil.
Its bio-degradable and odour free .... this all means that you simply put it into the washing machine with a few old t shirts ... and hey presto out comes a clean and 'tight' looking filter.

No smell,, no work,, no fuss ,, easy.

I used to use the solvent based oils, and got fed up of stinking of petrol and taking ages to wash the filter etc.
Wont go back now.
