incase anyone didn't know, honda have a promotion on next month where if you book a test ride between certain dates, you are entered into a prize draw to win whichever bike you decide to test, see here https://ww1.honda.co.uk/testrideandwin/

anyway, since the new blade came out i have been itching for a go on one but wasn't very hopefull of any dealer letting me loose on a brand spanking blade, due to me only having my full licence 6 months and never ridden anything bigger than a 600.

I thought what the hell, they can only say no, so i rang up the nearest dealer and tried my luck, they asked a few questions such as licence details etc.. and to my delight, they said yep thats fine, what date you looking at, so im now booked in for saturday the 21st at 11.00am, so if your near chesterfield i would keep off the road for a bit at this time.

so i was just wondering, how do test rides work.
do they follow you on a different bike or send you off on your own for a bit as they have my bike, passport, driving licence.
also how long do they usually last?

im right exited Laughing

It depends on the dealer. Some will take you on a specific route, other will just follow you while some will give you the keys and let you go. They can be anywhere from 10 minutes upto a whole weekend.

I test rode an RR3 at a Honda dealer after going in with my 600F. They left me to it and I was off for about an hour, got it warmed up, played on A-Roads and a few twisties to see if it was to my liking.

Done the same again when I got my RR7, had a go on a demo one though, the one I got had 0.0 miles when i took it from the shop Very Happy

Last time I went in they did offer to let me take one of the new blades out but I'd end up buying it like a tit and loosing lots of money on mine + it would cost me a small fortune to insure.

I'm only 23 and when I got my first RR was not far past 21.

Just ask the dealer when you take it that you want to have a good play, see how comfy it is and give it a mix of roads - normally they are ok with that and expect you to have a bit of a blat around.

Only problem is, if your on it for that long, you'll want to part with your firstborn/checkbook/gran to have it when you get back to the shop.

just out of curiosity, did you find your rr3 a bit snatchy at lower revs and hard to shift gears smoothly asif there were too much play in the chain?

At the end of the day, it is down to the particular dealer, if you are well known/regularly have your bike serviced there, they would most likely be OK with just letting you go, after you sign the compulsory excess for their insurance Laughing

When I passed my test, I bought a CB500 second hand, they had no issues with me going for a spin, but of course, it was cheap, old, and they knew it was a realistic bike for me, had I asked about the CB1000R they had for about £7k, they might not have been so keen Thumbs Up Laughing

Occasionally yes, but not often - it was very snatchy until the engine warmed up (say to at least 45c-50c).

I always had to be very very smooth on the throttle as it would snatch if you went on or off quickly- even fairly lightly.

At low speeds, lots of clutch slipping was required to keep it smooth. Gear changes we're always smooth though although occasionally it would hit neutral going to second.

When it was serviced, it ran like a dream but if it didn't get serviced then it turned really badly and became very noticably different to ride.

I had my RR3 from 11k to 24k if that helps as well but last service I done was at 22k and it was still very good at that point.

thats nice to know then, i've spent the last 6 months thinking there was something wrong with it. at higher speeds/revs the changes are almost seemless, its just the slow speed roll on/off throttle in first that resembles a kangaroo with epilepsy so as you say, its just a case of mucho clutch slipping.

Yeah thats exactly it, the RR7 also has the same issue. Have to be really smooth and its still a little jerky at times. A kangaroo with epilepsy actually isn't too far from it either! Shocked
