How much longer can this country remain socially stable when companies continue to employ cheap foreign labour, even though many British people are being made redundant by the truckload?

A long time, because consumers want it cheaper as lower labour costs = either lower costs to the consumer and or bigger profits to the company or a combination of these two..

100000s of jobs have been lost in textiles and manufacturing in the UK , but as long as people are happy paying £3 for a top from matalan, people will be perfectly happy (for others) to have lots and lots of UK job losses.

And yet the same people are willing to pay millions for a foreign football player to play in an English football team.

There really is no need to worry. Our wonderful government will borrow more money to make us all feel better again. Our grand-children can pay off the debt for us. It's a win-win situation for us greedy bastards. F*ck the grand-children eh. (not literally of course, unless you're an MP:)

Cheap foreign labour has been used for years, just not usually en masse to replace unionised workers.

Its called a free market, we buy cheap foreign goods, we pay cheap foreign workers.

No, thats Globalism (TM) for you.

Massive mega-corps moving their manufacturing plants to whichever country has the lowest working conditions regs / payscales and a corrupt government in place that accepts cash to look the other way.

Coca-Cola, for example, machine-gunning South American workers that went on strike.

Thumbs Down

In short, British workers have a nasty habit of walking out on strike during times of financial crisis, just like they are doing now.

I wouldn't employ a unionised British labour force if I were in the manufacturing sector.

A brief history lesson.

Here is what happens (is happening, has happened before, will happen again).

Company hits hard financial times due to reduce in demand due to recession. Needs to reign in spending, production will need to be cut to match demand.

Nothing for it, there will have to be redundancies/cuts in overtime/reduction in hours.

They target these measures in the areas where production needs to be cut back so they can keep the meat and trim the fat. Trade union are unhappy about this and insist on a last in, first out policy. Or bluntly refuse to accept there have to be cut backs. Company officials try to explain that this isn't going to help the situation, there is not enough money coming in to sustain the current staffing levels.

Shop steward calls a vote. Workers walk out. Picket company, "We shall not be moved.".

Company now in position of having to either employ people to do a job they don't need and let people go they really needed or hold out as long as they can in the hope someone will see sense.

Two weeks later, company official approackes the picket line and chains up the gates. Shop stewards demand to know what is going on, company official tells them to ask the recievers.

Besides which. It's an illegal strike, the company would be quite within their rights to sack the lot of them.
