Ive moved into a place that has a white bathroom suite/tiles/everything.

THe suite itself is easy to clean as are the tiles. However the grout a little yellow and the sealant around the shower has spots of mould on it.

I have tried a standard bathroom cleaner with bleach and scrubbed, but it doesn't seem to do very much. I know I can buy a grout pen, but is there a more effective way of cleaning them back up to what they should be? I suspect caustic soda would be a little too strong for a porous material?

Cheers!

I've never managed to get mildew off sealant once its been there awhile.

Just strip the old sealant out, clean the surfaces and put fresh in. Probably cheaper than buying cleaning stuff.

I really wasn't ever gonna ask this on a bike forum Laughing but since you've brought the subject up...

Are those grout pens actually any good? And do they literally paint 'grout' into old grout or is it just a kind of oil based paint that covers it all in a thin layer?

Thumbs Up

Some helpful ideas. I may just replace the sealant, might be easier and look a lot nicer.

Also have another issue that I need help with, should have asked before! Laughing

The bath is (I assume) enamelled steel. Somehow the previous tennants managed to chip it all over the outer edge. Being steel, it rusts easily and look horrible.

I've tried sanding back then using an enamel based paint to cover the mess up, but it just comes back and the paint flakes off.

Think the previous tennants were right grubby fuckers!

Needs a metal primer.
usually the ones that make it look red oxide colour, but you can get white primers. then paint your oil based over the top.

use plain old bleach. really give the tiles a good old soaking and let it drain into the bath overnight. i promise it works and you'll be amazed. bloody stinks though.

I had the same problem with grotty grout.

I found this stuff is unbeatable (short of ripping the tiles off and starting again).

https://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:VfO0w_G7hxyWlM:https://www.wilkinsonplus.com/content/ebiz/wilkinsonplus/invt/0265163/0265163_l.jpg

Apply it, leave it for 10mins or so and rinse off.

Voila, whiter than white grout will be revealed.

I warn you though, it can become quite addictive getting things white. I had to restrain myself from pouring it all over anything slightly grey in colour.

My silver tabby persian was about to become a retina melting brilliant white, when I suddenly came to my senses.

Although, you can see me in the dark from a distance of approx 1.3km when I smile now.

Don't worry about it, until just before you move out, then apply tippex... Laughing

Sugar soap and a bit of elbow grease should bring the grout back to white. The grout pens are just like a paint that colours the grout white, I personally never found them any good. I ended up scraping the grout out & re-grouting.
