As a percentage of your savings/expendable income, how much would you devote to your biking habits? This includes treatment products and setting cash aside for work you think you may need/want.

I will spend whatever is necessary but not over the market price for a particular bike.

probably a good 80%, but being a student my financial situation is quite far from real life.

When I was working over summer, other than a half dozen nights out all my money went on bikes/petrol

When I first started I would spend anything I had on biking. Now since Ive gotten more and more bitter with the whole biking experience and Ive stopped riding as much, I havent really bothered that much. I bought the Hayabusa last year for 5k, since then my biggest outlay has been the 600 quid for the insurance. Apart from fuel and tax Ive spent nothing more on biking since summer. All ive done is buy an optimate and go to the bike show.

As a percentage of my earnings, its difficult to say. Very low, probably less than 5% recently (not including the purchase of the 'busa, although since I sold the ninja it only cost me about a grand anyway).

Thumbs Up Wink

Was hit by a car whilst stationary (the fat arsed woman in front of me in traffic decided she wanted to reverse over me) and from that point on I was let down left right and centre. I was accused of driving without due care (apparently I ran into the back of her, without doing any damage) and it took 4 years to sort out which eventually went 50/50. I was on my holiday in Mexico last year and stood talking on the phone to the moronic solicitor back in England as I had been summoned to court whilst I was away. Lost no claims etc etc.

Garage put my back wheel on incorrectly and I ended up down the road.

Made some silly mistakes, so on and so forth. That coupled with a lot of the elitism that goes on has kind of disillusioned me. Just don't have the passion for it I used to have. Reminds me of when I was a boy racer in my GTI, always chasing something and never getting anywhere! Confused Thumbs Up

Definitely under 10% at the moment. Most of my money goes in the bank and I don't get much because I don't have a job.

Still richer than most though Cool

I spend about £250 a year on the bike in insurance, tax, MOT, service items. I've had the CB500 for coming up to 3 years (a record for me, I average 2 years at the most) and bought it for just under a grand, so it's cost me roughly £580 a year so far, excluding petrol. Or £1.59 a day/£48 a month.

As a percentage of my income; I'm on JSA at the moment, so it's about 20%.

As a percentage of my savings, none of your bloody business Smile

i rarely ever touch my savings for my bikes (bank savings) unless it's a bargain i "really" can't refuse....

i generally have a little "float" money laying about to buy the essentials such as brake pads, tyres or oil/filter as needed anything i consider too expensive i save up seperately for, all of my bikes are old and secondhand as is half my bike clothing ...

i refuse to spend silly amounts on bikes and the associated gear when i can have just as much fun on something that is cheap

Christ, I pay thousands per year on my hobby.

Luckily I'm an old fart with a good job so I can afford it.

.

i cant say how many % of my earnings go to my bike. i buy things which i think good to my project bike.

upgrading bike is kinda addicting.

if ill try to compute all my expenses to my project bike, its close to a second hand 00's model 600cc or 1000cc motorcycle.

once my project is complete, ill get a comprehensive insurance.

If the wife is reading this i never spend more than £1000 on a bike and about sixpence every 4 years on spares, clothing, helmets, etc.

If she isnt, i spend as much as i can get away with.

Granted that i had a Uni trust fund and student loan, I don't really know how much I spend on my bike and accessories.

Based on the basic budget of 1 year at uni, I'm given about 6k to live off through trust funds and loan (excludes rent & bills). Of that amount, since starting my final year,

I've spent:

£400 on insurance for the Ninja (which i reclaimed £78 quid from selling)
£175 on servicing and spare parts (new sump, HT leads, plugs etc)

But I've sold the bike for £1200

In doing so, I bought a fireblade just the other week for £2400 and spent another £420 on insurance. I've just spent £40 on accessories such as LED rear lights and indicators.

So at the moment, the sum total is £2157/£6000 so it's about 35% of my overall yearly "earnings". That said, once I've graduated, I'd be taking in 3 times that amount so bike stuff will be considered more of a "disposable income purchase".

Students eh!? Who said we had it hard! Granted, it's difficult to get a job in the current climate.

So in short, if it's not a "purchase year" which happens every 2 years, I tend to spend £1000 a year on bikes (tyres, full service, leathers and accessories).. More if i have a crash! I often think it might be cheaper to do what instigator does and buy bikes for less than 1.5K and sell them on for the same price on a 4 monthly basis.

I personally don't think that it's worth my while currently to spend more than 2.5k on a bike that you effectively want to use as a fun weekend toy and an occasional commuter.

I'm a complete tightwad when it comes to bikes (and cars) - I resent spending more than a few hundred quid.

My CD250U has been good value though - bought it for a couple of hundred just over a year ago and have basically spent nothing on it bar changing the oil. It returns loads of MPG and has just managed to pass the MOT again which is nice.

When (or if, the way things are looking) I manage to get a job after graduating I'll probably spend a bit more on a half-decent bike - maybe a grand or two. I don't really see the point of spending any more than that.

I havn't spent a penny on bikes for 3years, all what i would have spent went on an eventual flat deposit and furniture, but i've got nearly £2k put to one side for:
a) getting my garage set up and equipt to actually be able work on bikes properly.

b) re-building my KMX200 that's been sat dead in the back of my parents garage for 4years! Shocked

Once my bike is rebuilt and working again, i don't intend on spending any money on bikes or gear for some time. I might be tempted by some sort of dirt cheap winter project for next winter, a cheap air cooled stroker or maybe a stepthrough i dunno? It would be best that i don't buy anything however, as my KMX was only supposed to be a quick re-build and tidy up project!

I'm probably going to sell my car in April and buy some sort of retro car as a project, as i love seeing 20year old+ cars that are spotless to look at and nice and low with cool rims, and a decent lump of fire breathing engine under the bonnet.

Will eventually get a naked litre bike as my next serious machine, and i'm sort of working on having one by my 35th, so i've got 4 1/2years to get my arse into gear and save up for a nice machine!

Oh and at some point i'd like to restore at least one 70's dirt bike, and a big air cooled 4cyl beast too, but it might be a little way off yet give or take a year or so! Smile

Gotta pay the SV off but i'd say it gets 5% of my wages including paying for it.

This month tho it has stainless downpipes + hi link pipe. And now i've got £70 to last me 3 weeks.

This month since pay day it's had

£50 - Insurance
£13 - ACF50
£100 - New Exhaust System
£125 - Payment
£1 - Muc Off for washing
£12 - Petrol

So out of £900 thats 30%. Probably need another tank or two of fuel too.

It depends what I need and when...as it is, when I bought the sv I still had the Bros...so when I sold the Bros the money I got for it was spent on the sv.

I have owned the sv for some 7 years now, so she doesn't want for a lot these days. Thumbs Up
